Do you actually use the DSG, or is it always in automatic mode?

Thought I might update this.
I eventually bought a 2011 Golf GTI dsg and can say that I love the dsg, but only in automatic. None of you mentioned that when in manual mode, if you put your foot to the floor that the kickdown is still active. This spoils it for me and my car spends 99.999% of the time in 'D'. I mentioned this annoyance in another thread and was told basically that I should read the manual as this is VW's designed behaviour, and suck it up. Well sorry, but I think when the car is in manual it should mean manual. It really shouldn't have been that hard for VW to deactivate the kickdown button when the transmission is in manual. As for 'S', haven't really found a use for it.

Have only had mine for two weeks but have mixed it up between D & S mainly with very little of the manual as it seems to be alot less aggressive than using the paddles in S. Only issue I have with using the paddles occassionally in S is getting it to stay in the higher gears. I can be doing 100km/hr on the Western Freeway and it keeps wanting to change back to 4th.
D is nice when heading off to work at 5am as I hit the freeway within two minutes of leaving home and it lets everything warm up.
On a side note I'm really pleasantly surprised at the fuel economy even after having used the various modes and having given it some stick on a few occassions.

If you are in manual mode and you floor it and it kicks down I suggest you were in the wrong gear. When we cane our dsg's up and down the twisties myself and others haven't experienced the kickdown probably because we are matching the correct gear for what we want the car to do. In manual mode say in 4th and you tramp the go fast pedal it will kickdown gears to match the response you are after otherwise it labours.Originally posted by pogo_55 View PostThought I might update this.

Keep this to yourself as I didn't tell anyone this on the weekend run we had..... but I stuffed up a gear change while caning it. Should have selected 4th but changed down to 2nd due to a brain snap. Lets just say not my usual way of getting it to redline in a hurry. Like I said please keep it to yourself. If I confessed this on vwgolf I'd be ridiculed off the forum, hehehe!Originally posted by Candyman View PostNever experienced the kick down issue when using manual either ?Golf R, Rising Blue, 5 Door, DSG and some extra fruit.

Yes, obviously and intentionally in the wrong gear. I want to feel the torque curve, but VW have decided I can't and all I can get is maximum acceleration, which in this case is not what I want. Remember we are talking about a "manual" mode......Originally posted by Rob_R View PostIf you are in manual mode and you floor it and it kicks down I suggest you were in the wrong gear. I guess noone has an issue with it like you do.Originally posted by pogo_55 View PostNone of you mentioned that when in manual mode, if you put your foot to the floor that the kickdown is still active.
Yep we hear what you are saying but nothing is going to change it. Vw designed it that way. It's not what you expected from manual mode...........um really don't know what else to say.Originally posted by pogo_55 View PostYes, obviously and intentionally in the wrong gear. As my mechanic says, brakes are simple and cheap to replace wherea engines, gearboxes and the drivetrain should never be used to slow a vehicle, you are just wasting money and wearing out the expensive parts.Originally posted by obiwan View PostI maybe do 50/50. If I'm driving a little bit more aggressively, I worry about brake life if I don't downshift and use some engine braking.

Whilst I agree, the R by design downshifts in auto mode, D AND S for engine brakingOriginally posted by Digger11 View PostAs my mechanic says, brakes are simple and cheap to replace wherea engines, gearboxes and the drivetrain should never be used to slow a vehicle, you are just wasting money and wearing out the expensive parts.8VSS2L/16 E9E9 XG MP SPP1 4ZD 6XK CSC5P with an extra free 10kW

When you put the go fast pedal to the floor, towards the bottom you will feel some slight resistance. Apparently at this point you have 100% throttle. Push past this point the dsg will change down if appropriate. Try it out and you will find that you can control the downshift.Originally posted by pogo_55 View PostThought I might update this.

I actually don't mind the change down as i can control the kickdown (by not going past the resistance point) but when i want to over take in manual mode i can mash the pedal to the floor and it changes down to the best gear and then i change up manually when i want......the best of both worlds IMOLast edited by Klink1313; 06-04-2012, 01:29 PM.Golf R 5 Door DSG, Rising Blue, 19" Wheels (Silver), Leather, MDI, RVC, Bluetooth, RNS510, APR Stage 2, APR Divorced DP, APR HPFP, VW Racing CAI, S2T Paddle Shifters, Sprint Booster
