has anyone actually used their bottle opener? why do we have one? is it some sort of ancient design feature that has carried down through the models?

it seams out of place in a modern car to have a really daggy old school bottle opener.

it doubles as an adjustable cup holder. Its kinda cool really. I was caught without a bottle opener once until I remembered there was one in my car.

Real Germans don't need bottle openers, they use their bare hands to open beer bottles... LOL

does any one know where you can buy these from? ( i checked ebay) my Mk5 is missing it which means i have no real cup holders in the car, its quite annoying.

actually my second question is, is the bottle opener cup holder any good? if its not i might just order an oem cup holder from ebay us which replaces that entire area (pictured belove) with real deep circular cup holders, found in the jetta and other US models.

I usually put a single cup into the deep holder, which is generally fine without the bottle opener being tightened on it. If I have two cups, I put the first cup into the shallow holder, push the bottle opener up to it, then put the second into the deep holder. Works well.

lol... seriously... I guess this is what happens when a brand gets too popular... the knowledge of the 'folk lore' and 'quirks' dilutes

Anyway - you can purchase genuine VW European parts from an American store called OEM Plus. They're setup to allow those poor American souls to purchase the cool spec accessories and parts that the Europeans (and we) get that they dont.

Here is a direct link to the bottle holder. It's US$30 plus whatever the shipping is.

You could also call your local VW Dealer or Accessories line and order it through them. Or if you recently purchased your car and it was not included, call them and ask them to give you one!

jessv3, actually the middle part can be used for take away coffee cups works a treat so you can still store things in the cup holders
