New Polo GTI Versus Golf GTI

I think the case for the New Polo GTI over the Golf MK6 GTI is directly related to that seemingly incurable disease affecting the automotive industry since the early 80's , Metal Creep , commonly known as Automotive Obesity, causing every new model of a current model to bloat up by around 5% year on year.
If you looked at the size of cars we called large back in the late 70's they now equate to a midsized sedan. Yes I know there's the safety thing going on, but it all can't be down to that. The fact that the New Polo is in all respects the same dimensionaly as the MK3 Golf testifies to this. I'll go the light on the road , light on the pocket route every time .

Yes, you make a very good point. The current polo GTI is a closer homage to the original Mk1 GTI than the MkV or VI is (in terms of size and nimbleness).

Yeah - I get your point, and you make it in each thread that this comes up in. BUUUT what also need to be said each time is that if you're looking at these options, as they're not standard on the Golf GTI anyway, you're only spending more money by switching to a Golf GTI and then including these options.

So someone that wants a car with Xenons, Sunroof, Navigation and Leather, or any combination of those, should just get the car they want to get, because changing to a more expensive car is just that - changing to a more expensive car.

It'd be a different situation if changing to a more expensive car already included those options like in some makes of car.

Yeah, but some people incl myself would forego a few of these options to get into a better car, agree you'd end up spending a lot more adding them to the more expensive car.

You get other features/quality for the price but prob not those options. At least the R32 came standard with leather, 18" wheels, bi-xenons so saves optioning those items.

People should get whatever options they want, but doesn't add any value to the car but may make it easier to sell.

Polo GTI have been sold off/on over the last couple of years for $27K drive away. And essentially the car is equipped to MK5 Golf GTI levels.

Leather was a $2500 option and was slightly more stylish than the leather option on the Golf GTI (nicer colour and red stitching). Sunroof was under 2000 (1500??)

Otherwise for the price the car was very well equipped for a euro car.

So I am guessing that the new Polo GTI will be in the price region of the current GTI. If you want to waste your money on pricey options then do so... you will make VW very happy

Having owned both cars, I'd disagree with that. Even removing all the options from the MKV Golf GTI, there are many things missing from the old Polo GTI.

This WAS true, but I fear the new Polo GTI might be so good it actually steals a few Golf GTI buyers.... which is not a bad thing for the brand

Let me see, off the top of my head and in no order of importance etc....

• Useful storage (there's no centre console bin, glovebox too small, no seatback storage, no sunglasses compartment in the headlining, no bottle holders in the doors, no dash cubbie on the right hand side of the steering wheel).
• No MFD
• No Configuration Menu
• No proper audio information (track time etc) on the stereo or MFD (since there isn't one)
• No climate control (just the 'semi manual' climatic) aircon
• No dual zone aircon
• No Autodimming rear view mirror
• No arm rest
• No chillable Glovebox or centre console
• No rear airconditioning vents (due to no arm rest etc)
• No central diffuser air vent (but then again, the MK6 don't have this anymore either)
• No Steering wheel controls
• No auto headlights
• No auto washers
• No speed sensitive washers or volume control (hmmm - not quite sure on the 2nd one)
• No 'leaving home/coming home' lighting
• No boot 'shopping bag' hooks
• No options for navigation
• No option for Xenons
• No option for Parking Sensors
• No DSG

Plus an overall lower quality of finish.
But that's just off the top of my head

LOL... I said MAJOR... and don't bring "options" into it

I think the later MP3 compatible stereos have track info. Speed sensitive volume is present. Variable speed intermittant wipers

Funny how none of those affect the drivability of the car.

I don't like all the automatic stuff. I don't need my CD player to tell me track names, I don't even like using the aircon.

If you want a luxuary vehicle, then the current Polo is not for you. If you like driving, it can be a great car.

Well no reason why you can't have both. The new Polo should have all the latest tech I would have thought!

I'd consider one if they were out right now.

It's the quality and all the technology that make VW's cool, otherwise you could get any old run about.

I don't think its that easy. Depends on your version of better. I'm 6"1' tall and I fit very comfortably in the current Polo (front and back). Others have commented that it is not practical as it is too small. Each to their own...

IMO, less weight is always a struggle in newer cars, two of the main reasons I bought the Pole were its easy to achieve 150kw power and 1150kg kerb weight.
