Anyone out there considering the new Polo GTI being released here later this year over buying the Golf GTI. The thing is supposed to do 0-100 in 6.9 secs and do it sipping 6.5L/100Ks.
There seems to be a few limitations with the new Polo, but until the details are released wont know for sure...
DSG only
3 door only
These are unconfirmed, Polo should be a few months away, GTI may scrape in this year.
I thought it was 5 door only in line with the Golf R and the possible Golf GTI.
DSG only annoys me and would turn me away from purchase if i was in the market for one.
Soon it may be the only 3dr sports VW on the market ...... with the Golf GTI and R rumoured to be 5drs only going forward.......
Too many issues with both the 1.4TSI and the DSG for me to be interested at all .... I'd have preferred a 6sp manual and the 1.8TSI engine from the A3 to be honest as a niche product in the VW range ....
Pick of the range for me will actually be the 1.6TDI (77kw/250NM) with 6spd manual. Oettinger chip and you've got 110kw and 320NM .... make for a nice nippy small hatch ....

Yeah, I'm happy with my little 1.8T in the Polo. Its not frugal, but there are plenty of big power options if you can work out how to get the power down.
To confirm, current information is that the new Polo GTI will be available this year. The other information is that it will be 5 door only. And yes, it's DSG only world wide - there is no manual option in any country.
VW Australia have thus far done an awesome job of bringing in each 'new' model at the same or lower price than the previous one. If we assume the same price of $26,990, but add $1500 for 5 door and $2500 for DSG, then it'll be $30,990.
To have it look like the press photos you could assume it'll also cost $2k for the large sunroof and $2k for the Xenon. But either way, it's going to be far less than the $38,990 of the Clio RS 200 Cup Trophee.
I dont think the polo will ever be a real threat to the MK5 Golf, they are 2 completely different cars and serve 2 different purposes. I can only really comment on the current shape polo gti vs an mk5 gti and although comparable on paper, out on the road the difference seem very apparent. The polo is a small car and it never lets you forget it, it doesn't quiet have the refinement, solidness and comfort of the Golf. I can get into the golf and it feels like im driving a solid midsizer, yet it still has the nimbleness of a small car. Admittedly i haven't spent as much time in a Polo but my point is that the Polo and the Golf serve 2 different markets, for those who are in the golf market it would be unlikely that they would be willing to make sacrifices around some of the core area's that has made the MK5/6 GTI such a success, particularly if we are only talking 8k difference.
If anything I think it will hurt the second hand Mk5/Mk6 Golf Gti market more then anything, as buyers will weigh up spending 30k on a 2 year old Golf or a brand new Polo.
I have had the Mark5 Golf GTI for the last 4 years - now changing to a Mark6 Golf GTI (due May 2010). My son has the Polo GTI (one of the first in Adelaide) and he loves it but sees the Golf GTI as a definite step up. So I agree they are two distinct markets but both are really good cars in their own right.
The 1.8 in the Polo is just begging for enhancement, but prior comments are right in how to control the power. Still, like to have the time and money to try.
The new Polo GTI looks and reads more like what my wife wants to replace her current car.

I've had a MKV Golf GTI and I now have the Polo GTI. Looking at the new Polo GTI, I would say that people with MKV Golf GTI's should be worried. Some people thinking about a second hand MKV Golf GTI purely for the performance might just look at the new Polo GTI instead. The quality of this new Polo looks awesome. The additional features such as the new RNS-310 and the Bi-Xenon and the general improvement throughout go a long way to lifting the benchmark for the 'small hatch' category.
But it does have to be pointed out that the Polo is a 'small car', and not a 'medium car' like the Golf. So I think that the majority of people looking at a Golf, will keep looking at the Golf.
The Golf GTI also has a LOT more 'easy tuning' potential than the Polo GTI. For one, the fact that it still uses the 6sp wet-clutch DSG which can handle APR's 300KW/500NM stage III kit
The new Polo GTI 's size is in every respect nearly identical to the MK3 Golf GTI of the mid 90's . It's performance though matches that of the 2010 Golf GTI.
The new Golf GTI looks positively overweight compared to it.
