DSG: Problems, Questions, Likes and Dislikes

don't like having to press eccelerator down to the floor to get anywhere in D - DSG.... will be getting stage one done in a few weeks... no question.

chipping will not fix this problem.... D is designed for fuel economy. my jetta will change gears at about 2000rpm when in D unless i really go heavy on the accelerator. chipping will just make it get there faster with the same accelerator position. yes mine is chipped and love it, but does not change the shift program of the gearbox.
what i do to get it to go is move it into manual mode and let it rev out longer in that one gear... then when i've reached the desired speed move it back into D.

Having more torque via the ECU flash means that it's not so much of an issue that it shifts up at 2000rpm, because you've already got much more torque and driveability there. (At least from my experience in flashing my MKV GTI DSG).

Hey guys, took the R outbfor another wrap last night, and had been cruising in a high gear like 5th or 6th for about 5 minutes straight at maybe 50-60km/h.. So very slow.

As I go over a speed bump, I go to (half-travel of the pedal) floor it, and it just revved out like it was in neutral. Once it nearly hit redline and I backed off, it then finally engaged.

Needless to say I didn't go straight home after that, so i went for a short strap but all seemed fine onwards from that. Tried LC twice and no problem. Shifted through a few gears and took a few corners just to "test" it and it seemed absolutely fine, now.

A little clunk etc is to be expected.. But a proper miss of gear? Is that normal ? It's only happened once I'm the 870kms.

Mine did a similar thing the other night but mine was from cold, went around a left hand corner and as i went to accelerate tacho just flew around towards redline as if it had gone into neutral, as you did, i quickly backed off and it went into gear. Thankfully hasn't happened again since.

I had this very early on around 300kms and she would've been warm at the time, running for around 15 mins so not full operating temp! Never done it again and has 1800kms up!

Paddles are good and this makes the DSG fun especially to hear the braaaap on upshifts - I sometimes slow down drop a gear and floor it so I can feel the rush and hear the braaaap, it's great therapy Possibly considering the longer Paddles as trying to quickly find the little paddle when you're flinging the wheel around is not the easiest thing to do!

I've had it happen to me too (the miss the gear thing). It was whilst I was leaving work, I'd just turned left after a traffic lights and I wasn't particularly meaning to floor it, but it missed the gear, rev'd a bit, so I took my foot off the accelerator, it went into gear, and I then accelerated again. I think it was around 350km - hasn't happened in the 650km since.

The Golf R apparently has an updated version of the 6sp DSG.
I'm wondering if this "missed gear" thing that many of us have experienced is part of the new programming? Maybe it's been programmed to do this in preference to "crunching" a change etc? We've all read of people who have heard a "bang" from the transmission when they've had a "hard" change. I don't know.

I do know that the DSG adapts. Contrary to popular believe, it's not adapting to you, it's adapting to itself. You think about when you get a new car, how it takes a little while to get used to the new clutch and gear throw etc. That's what the DSG adapts to (in a non-technical sense). Anyway - keep us posted guys. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has it happen to them again.

Yeah, you can get aftermarket paddles which are longer you can get them in silver or black.. I think Corey organised a group buy at one stage.. he is possibly best placed to give you the skinny ( and I think photos )

As posted before (I think on another thread) I'm having problems when slowing down to take corners (normal speeds) - the DSG will be in 2nd gear when turning, accelerator off, then when reapplying the throttle after the turn it clunks/jerks into third?! It tends to do this on a regular basis and am having some concerns that it's just not performing as it should??? Now when I turn corners, I barely touch the throttle so to minimise the problem.....it this only happening to me???

Some odd issues being described. My DSG has never once skipped a beat that I can think of.

Come hard into a corner in D or S and it downshifts perfectly. Come out of the corner and dump it and its smooth.

When driving with gear selector in “D" my GTI with DSG doesn't shift down into first gear until I am traveling at 2 kph or fully stopped according to the digit readout speedo......most times I am powering off in 2nd gear which also feels wrong as it should be in 1st....example is at roundabouts and give way signs.

When changing up from 1st to 2nd I am travelling at around 17 kph, so fine there but from 2nd to 3rd it's very early changing up also.
A lot of my driving is stop/ start so for convenience I tend to use “D"
Also when changing down it can be a bit jerky from 3rd gear down with my foot pressed lightly on the brake pedal, but this is intermittent and more noticeable when cold.

From memory it used to change down to 1st at 3-4 kph and only occasionally I would be caught out.
As we went for a decent cruise yesterday, it was sticking to 2nd a lot, so changed over to the paddles anyway.

Could any GTI DSG owners let me know at what speed yours changes down according to your digital speedo from 2nd to 1st when
in “D" mode...... any thoughts from any Forum members would be appreciated.
Oh and it's done just under 3000kms, so I realize it's only early days....need a road trip alright AdamD

The DSG in my R hangs on to 2nd down to basically a stop. I have been caught out on a few uphill giveway signs before....

Same - 1st gear is used only when (nearly) stopped in my car.

Yes thats exactly what I copped. Cruising at maybe 40-50 in 5th, go over a speed bump at maybe 30km/h.. and vrrrrroooooom, revs jump through the roof.

Hasnt happened again to me, but I gotta say, its not the safest thing in the world - probably worthy of a toyota recall

All jokes aside if that did happen in the wrong situation you could quickly find yourself in a really bad spot.

Mine's the same - tends not to drop back to first until about 2km/h (and possibly only after a second or so has passed at that speed). To be honest it doesn't really bother me, as the car has enough torque to pull off comfortably in second, and I tend not to be in a position to gun it after having just about come to a (near) halt. I do however reall having intentionally brought the car to a complete stop on a few occasions, to force it into first for an easier takeoff.
