i just picked up my DSG GTI. If you love manual get manual, nothing beats it. I have a manual 'toy' to keep me happy. The GTI is my commuting car, and the DSG is fantastic. These cases of DSG slippage are not nice to read, and touch wood I don't get a similar thing, but don't let it deter you from choosing DSG.

I've driven a mk5 DSG GTI and it was good, but I think the mk6 is an improvement. Car creeps forward when lifting off the brake, and takeoff is pretty good, not as good as an auto but not far off. I've only done 150km tonight and I'm already pretty much used to it.

Put it in D though and i might as well be driving a Merc. It's good.

      • Dropped off my Gt golf at Barloworld Fivedock for a Metrotronic transplant this morning, and got a free loan car from VWA
Said it should be ready this afternoon late , Just rang and was informed that they have now decided to replace the whole gearbox
as the Metrotronic did not remove all the fault codes, The problem is now where to find a new gearbox on short notice and they are trying to find one in Australia,so i dint know when it will be returned at least it will save me having the DSG serviced next service .

My wifes 2009 Golf TSI broke down. The engine starts, and revs normally, but no matter what gear you place it in, the car does not move.
We tried turning the car off and on, and still nothing. VW assist sent out the repair man - who shock his head and said "it will have to go back to the dealer", so they sent a tow truck to pick it up.

The car had a new clutch fitted at 12 months, and a replacement engine at 18 months. And of course there is still the turbo/supercharger/squeal.

It will be interesting to see what VW says tomorrow.
Exactly the same happened to my wife's 2009 118TSI DSG yesterday on a 6 lanes carriageway and engine light came up as well. Bad timing and location as well when this happened, as she was in the median lane blocking peak hr commuters. She panicked as hell so I had to take a taxi from work for a rescue mission. By the time I arrived, some kind passers-by helped my wife pushed the car to the kerb-side lane, although still on the road, not footpath given it was on a uphill section. Kudos to those who helped especially one of the ladies volunteer even having kids with her.

Btw, the engine had been replaced 3 months ago around Christmas due to compression issues, and now the DSG? and/or engine again? Regular service originally scheduled this Friday but looks like we don't need it for the time being....

To add to the frustration, some what 2 weeks ago I felt like the turbo was not kicking in and the clutch was frequently slipping in 2nd gear. I took it to the VW service centre and the technican agreed with my observations. He reset a few things and told me it's safe and sound. Still waiting for call from VW about the car and possible courtesy car. Sorry about the rant guys.

          • Just wasn't my day, Got a phone call saying the car will be ready about 3 pm today, When i got there they had a pile of paper work about 5 Cm high must of been over 100 pages , well said the car was now ready to go so handed them the keys to the loan car and headed home to the west drove about 3 k's and put on the washers wipers but they didn't work .
So i did a uturn and returned to Barlo they thought it was just a blown fuse ,but 30 minutes later they couldn't find the cause and handed me back the keys to the loan car,so it looks like i'm without my car until at least Monday,
Anyway got a complete gearbox transplant plus a new exhaust sensor, plus a lot of software upgrades ,I'll let you all know what happens on Monday .

              • Got the car back wipers working but it had nothing to do with Barlow ,The panel shop didn't connect the switch in the bonnet release catch which stops the wipers from working when the bonnet is raised and because they didn't connect it the wipers didn't work ,so much for reputable repairer.

                • DSG - phantom neutral?

A couple of times when going around a corner (both left and right) as i have put my foot down there is a loss of drive and sounds like the box is in neutral. I lift my foot and then seems to reengage. The couple of times it has happened I have been in D.

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so was there a fix?

                  Thanks

                  • There are a few owners having the same issue. There is a thread on the DSG in the mk6 section that will tell you all about it.

Hey mate. Merged your thread here. There are several people, almost all of them R owners, like yourself, who have experienced this problem.
So far several of them have mentioned that it's serious and they're going to take it to the dealer, but I can't recall anyone actually having done so yet.

When it was first reported, someone said they had spoken to a dealer and they said that VW are aware of it and are looking at a software update for the DSG, but that was several months ago and I've heard nothing since...

Has anyone been to the dealer?
Anyone heard anything about a possible DSG software update?

                      • I often find the DSG Gearbox jerky and i know it is a common problem on the mk5 and mk6 golf which vw should rectify which will make the drive a much more pleasured experience.

No idea what the dealers say about this, but I get this on a semi-frequent basis... exactly as Brick described.

Overheating I could understand, but not when it's only been driven for an hour!

Either way, it shouldn't be doing this. I'm sure that VW put it through more rigorous testing than what mr/mrs General Public can dish out. Mine's booked in for May due to the shudder and the stalling/non selecting gear. We'll see what happens.

                            • i've had a few issues with the dsg in my r.....th eworst being entering a freeway from the onramp.....pulled into the lane and the car lost all drive....and just revved. I drive it with the paddles all the time so i just flicked it back into D and it found a gear. It wasn't the best experience when you have a pile of freeway traffic bearing down on you. It went into the dealer for a check but nothing to report. Anyone else had this?

Not the same, but the dealers haven't found anything code wise, though I took a techie for a spin and he went:"Hmm, that's not good!" Shuddering on take off now and clutch pack rattle
