  • Can't remember now... it was 8.5 years ago and I got rid of the car about a year and a half ago...

    • Had the oil changed at about 8000km (6 months from new) just the other week at the 1st service.

I reckon now there is less black 'crap' on the back of the car now after the change.

Dunno if i'm imagining it or if the oil put in at the 1st service makes the engine burn a bit cleaner???

Yes, I think you may be right — my TDI (Candy White, so the lumps were pretty obvious) has no sign of the lumps of black ash that always showed up after a longish run before the first service.

Current oil is Mobil 1 ESP 5W30. What the factory oil was I've no idea, but the new one is a lighter colour and feels different on a finger test.

Adheres better and noticeably more slippery — so far no noticeable drop in oil level (not that I saw any before the service either...)

        • Hey guys my GTI will be coming up to 6 months old in December. I'll only have done around 4000 kms by then though. Denlo Parramatta have told me the 7500 km/6 month service is optional and does not involve an oil change, it is just a basic check. They want $99 for it. Seems like a waste to me.

The car is running fine and I can check the oil level myself. I'm thinking of giving it a miss but is there any way to clear the service indicator on the mfd? I really don't want to be driving around for 6 months with it blinking or beeping at me.

Why would the service indicator come up? It should be set to 15,000km/12m.

If it's like a Skoda: sit in car with seatbelt on and engine running. Turn ignition off. press trip meter reset (which should show distance to next service), then hold tripmeter reset until the display resets to 15,000/12

                • Thanks guys, I'll have a look through the menus on the MFD tonight and see if I can clear it.

The car has said 7500 kms on the MFD for the first service ever since I picked it up, which is strange seeing as the manual states that the official service is 12 months or 15000 kms. I am assuming they can set whatever figure into the service indicator that they like...

                      • Bit disappointed with the service department at my dealer.
The manual states first service at 15,000 yet the dealer said at time of purchase 7,500 and placed a sticker on the car stating this.
seemed to be a grab for profits but didn't worry me until I received a letter yesterday saying they'd booked me in for my 6month 7,500 km service. they seem to be praying on people who don't read the manual or are easily persuaded.

Out of interest I rang another dealer to get an idea of the cost of the 15,000 service and they quoted $380.....that seems excessive for a disc pad inspection , oil and filter change plus resetting the service indicator and fitting service sticker.
How much they paying Apprentices these days anyway?

                          • I got a letter from my dealer saying they recommend my vehicle is serviced every 6 months, or 7,500 kms, whichever occurs first. They also have tentatively booked me in.

                            • I had a service at 6 months (which was about 8000kms) and it cost me $390. I only really went in becuase of issues I was having but figured that it was worth having the service done as well. I have to say that I am really happy with the car after the service even though I would have prefered not have shelled out the $390.

For what reason? Do you operate under one of the severe service conditions listed in the service/warranty book?
