Phoned the dealer, who said the 7500 km service is an oil change, and top up of fluids (window washer fluid etc), vaccum and wash. All for the bargain price of $180!

Took golf in the other day (8000kms on the clock) to local dealer because of creaking in dash, B pillar creak and ticking noise when turning steering wheel in any direction. Workshop mechanic took car for a drive to hear sounds (he was only able to confirm steering wheel ticking noise and creaking in dash). He noticed the odometer reading and asked if I wanted car booked in for 7500km service, (I was told when I purchased the car there would be a $110 charge for the 7500km service so I wasn't going to worry about it) explained this to workshop mechanic and on returned to dealer we asked service manager about charge and was promptly informed there was no charge for this 7500 km service, so I said you might as well do it then.....!!!!!!
So car got 7500km check over (no charge, but no oil changed) dash creak attended to, steering wheel ticking noise fix (have to wait for replacement part to arrive-been two weeks now) and car will have to be booked in again. B pillar creak wasn't heard so it wasn't fixed, at least its logged if that makes any difference.
Service good, can't complain
OK, there is no "official" 5000, 7500 service for the golf. You can opt for the 7500 oil change if you want. Anything else is jam for the dealer....
Yeah just tell the dealer to RTFM after you have read it! However, there is a big difference between a dealer trying to charge you for this service and a dealer doing it for nix. But, if at the end of the day you are happy with the service your dealer is giving you and you like giving them a little jam to check your oil. Go for it. I personally like my oil changed every 5000km.
Hardly prehistoric. All the performance car owners/tuners, V8 and Fast Fours that I have known will service their cars more often than the recommended service schedule. Turbo engines also tend to burn more oil than a naturally aspirated one, especially when driven harder... The harder you drive a turbo the more oil they use. You get out of your engine what you put into it... just like life. That's my opinion and your entitled to it.
The owner's manual says 15000 or every 12 months which ever occurs first and that is what I stick to.
I may drive a performance car but i don't drive it like I'm a performance driver. I drive according to the instructions of the manual which is to drive the car in an fuel economy fashion.
I top up the engine oil myself (using approved VW's engine oil) and the coolant(VW approved).
Apologies in advance, I know what i'm about to ask has/would have been discussed thoroughly before but in my searching I couldn't find the answers.
My GTI is due for the 7500KM / 6 month minor service (car has only only done just over 6000KM) and I've previously asked my dealer what is performed. From what i understand they just run some health checks on the car and make sure everything is functioning as it should. I was quoted $99 and I had asked if they change the oil and was told not at the minor service. What are peoples thoughts on getting the 7500KM minor service done? Good idea to get it done or just another ploy to squeeze more $$$ out of you? I'm going to get my wastegate actuator clip installed as well as address another small warranty issue so it might be better to get all 3 done on the same day...
I know there has been numerous discussions about when you should get the oil changed / topped up but from what i read there was no definitive "change the oil every X KM's" or "change the oil every major service". So at this point i'm still confused as to if i should wait for the 15000KM service to get the oil changed or if I should get it changed now. Either way whenever i do get it changed i think i'm going to stick with a VW specialist rather than the dealer / service dept.
If you need to get your wastegate clip and a few other issues looked at on the same day, then it's up to you whether you wanted to spend the $99... it doesn't really cost you anything more (time, hassle getting to the dealer etc), since you're already there.
Beyond that, I'd say why bother unless you think there is something wrong.
As you've already found out - they don't replace any oil or fluids or other consumables... it's just a check.
My GTI had used 1-2 litres of oil, its done 11,000km. Oil is quite black. I wish my dealer had advised me to do an oil change at 7500km. I would have done it. It certainly cant hurt to have clean oil
