  • I don't know where in Melbourne you're located but I recently got a quote from Paintwerks in Moorabbin. $500 to remove the front bumper, strip it down, base, clear, bake and reassemble. They came highly recommended by a friend and the guy seems really genuine. Worth noting that some repairers only respray the damaged area and 'blend' the rest of the panel. Probably very cheap for insurance purposes and might explain the discrepancy in your quotes.

    • Well almost 2 years to the day.. damn garage door opener is as temperamental as a teenage girl, first it never opens and then you breathe on it and it opens/ shuts.

Anyway I usually clean the car out side and dry in the garage, jump in the car to move it and must have triggered the garage door which promptly closes dow on the roof as I am moving in and puts 6 inch scratches down the roof line like a 8 lane highway. Seem to be mostly clearcoat scratches but too deep to buff out.. fark fark fark fark

        Ouch!!!

I know a really good detailer in your area, he may be able to minimise the damage if you dont want to respray.

PM me if you want some details.

Just spent the last hour buffing and polishing it, cleaned it up but you can still see the imperfections in the clearcoat. Will probably have to get a pro detailer to fix it, doubt it will require a respray as it doesn't look like it has cut to the primer.

I've sent him a message to see if he wants to have a look. I'll pass on his details if he's interested.

              • Golf rear damage, what would you do?

I need some advice ASAP, I stupidly reversed into a pole and damaged my bumper , rear tail light and quarter panel, got a couple of quotes, my problem, is one one of the repairers wanted to replace the rear quarter panel and the other said it's not that bad and he can fix it and keep it as original as possible, he prefers not to replace quarter panels and likes to keep things original.

it's an insurance job so price is not a factor, just want a good job...sigh.

                • If at all possible I'd go for the repair — there are known problems with work involving welded panels on those bodies (future rust, for one,) plus galvanized panels need specialised knowledge (and equipment) to weld successfully.

                  • Thanks found 2 places that both agree it can be fixed without replacing the panel.

                      • Oh dear,

Not the thread I wanted to be posting in on my return to the forum Missus just accidentally reversed the 'R' into a garage pole, couple of big scrapes, one looks down to primer on back quarter near the sensor.

Last time I used a company called Chips Away, they still around? Any advice on paint matching company for rising blue?

Picture below, also got a couple of scrapes on front lower bumper / few small kerb crunches on black alloy Talladega's over the two years, so might as well get it all done at once....

                        Cheers

They will tell you straight up if it can be repaired by them or no, my guess is that if after you give it a buff you can get your fingernail into the scratch then you are going to need to take it to a pro.. I would be getting quotes for the insurance about now

                          • Had my second scrape in the life of a GTI , interesting how my dash cam into play .

Lady decided to back into me as I stopped behind her in the centre of a one way street , yes that is a camera and you did back into me .

Insurance co was no problem , got my excess covered , we both had the same insurance co .

However what I thought was just a few scrapes on the bumper centre left turned out to be a new bumper as the inside of the bumper was fractured by the metal bar behind , about $1600 and 3 days .

Funny bit was watching the replay of the car moving around the workshop , good drivers in confined spaces those fender menders .
