  • DSG Gear shift knob

Hi all, I am can't afford a GTI but would buy a 118TSI Comfortline with sport package. However, the gearshift isn't that beautiful (took bulky) and would like to get the "Sports gearshift knob" as shown in the option catalogue. Has anyone done that ? Would you know how much it cost ? Would anyone have a picture of it or is it exactly the same as the GTI ? Thanks for your help !

I was (and still am) in the exact same boat. I rang a few dealers trying to find out about this option. None of them had a clue. Some said it was just for manual (I am getting an Auto)

As you said, it is listed as a dealer fitted option for (p34 catalogue).

I would be interested as well to find out how to get the GTI (Auto) sports gear knob.

The GTI was out of my price range, especially if I added the options I wanted. I still would like to make some after market changes to give my 118TSi a more "Sporty" look.

It is around $400 + installation. Check with the service department, the pricelist is in the folder near the service desk.

Thanks Sillygogo, do you know what the part number is? also, do you know how difficult it is to install it yourself?

Sorry, don't know the parts number. Shouldn't be that hard, I think the labour charge was 30minutes for VW service.

            GTI gearknob

It looks like not many people have been doing the exercise of replacing the standard DSG gearknob with the GTI one.
I have enquired at 2 different dealers: one told me it wasn't possible, the other quoted me $788 for the part + $130 for install.

I am now wondering if it is worth it...

What do you think about the standard DSG gearknob while using the geasrbox in the "manual" mode ? Isn't the GTI gearknob better to switch gears up/down ?

i was in the same boat like you guys, when enquired was told something more than 500, which is not worthy get done. I agree, GTI gear knob is much better in terms of using manual mode.

Ring up the parts department directly. I picked up a part for my Golf yesterday and asked about the Sport gear nob. Its $255 inc Gst , not sure about installation cost or how it looks.

That $255 gear stick is only for manual gearbox though...

I have no problem using the T-bar to go up and down through the gearbox. Now, if I was going to get anything off the GTI it would be the paddles.

Not having used the GTI DSG knob I find it hard to believe it could be much better to use than the one in the 118TSI.

There is something that is not totally obvious with the one fitted to the 118TSI in Tiptronic mode - While you can move the lever forward/aft full travel or about 0.5 cm each way to effect a gear change - it is only necessary to actually move it about 1mm each way to achieve same.

So move it either way a nats whisker and it will change. Maybe 2mm at most. Makes for quick changes with absolutely minimal movement of the lever.

                        DSG knob

                        Hi there.
Tonight I was moving the DSG knob from P to R, however I pushed the silver part of the gear stick before I pushed my foot on the brake pedal. There was a slight clicking sound, and now when the gear stick is in P I am able to push the silver part of the gear stick without having my foot on the brake pedal, as opposed to before when the silver part would not push in unless my foot was pushed on the brake pedal. Is this something i should be concerned about? Hope this made sense

Is it just being able to press the button without your foot on the brake or is it an issue with the shift lock itself - that is, can you actually move the selector from P to R without your foot on the brake? (this should not be possible)... If it is I'd probably get it looked at - is the car under warranty?

                          Regards,
                          - Anthony.

                            DSG Shift knobs

anyone know of any aftermarket shift knobs for a 118 tsi dsg? i hate the t-bone look, the only alternative i have atm is like the 300$ edition 30 golf ball look, is there any other alternatives that anyone know of?

It appears the Mk6 GTD DSG shifter is available (ie. it has black instead of red stitching as the GTI does)
