Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

How is diesel "green"? Generally a diesel car will produce more noxious exhaust fumes (particulates, NOX) than a petrol car. They are the important pollutants in major cities. Forget the C02 rubbish.

Because not everyone wants to hunt for 98RON petrol!

Well you could option a GTD up to $75K before you have to pay LCT, instead of $57K for a car with a consumption rating of over 7.5l/100km, haha. (I think that consumption figure is right, it's close anyway.)

        • Hi all,

Saw a GTD at a dealer today which will remain anonymous. I was impressed! The interior is nicely understated compared to the jacky in the GTI and the wheels look very nice with the shadow effect on the inside. I think I might have to seriously consider this car. Yes, for me diesel is important for the torque surge. I truly believe non-diesel drivers have to experience it first hand before they really understand, it not all about power (kW's).

Have you actually driven a turbo petrol car? Currently my polo gti has 330Nm from a 1.8L petrol engine. It will give you the same (if not better) "surge" as the Golf GTD.

That's a pointless argument in this context. All a GTD owner has to do is reflash their ECU and regain the advantage over a tuned Pogo.

                    Yes, owned 2 x WRX's.

                    • I've had two WRX's (99 WRX hatch and 03 STi). The STi was heavily tuned to 600nm - but only made that torque over 4500rpm. It was awesomely fast (sub 5 sec 0-100), but painful as a daily driver and drank fuel.

I've now got an 08 GT TDI and although it isn't faster 0-100, in gear accel is much better from low revs, it has no lag comparatively, and gets under 6L per 100k's.

I'm much happier with the GT. Bring on diesel power! (any detractors - just look at the top three cars in LeMans 2009)

I mean a turbo petrol car with a decently tuned engine - lol WRX are know for their peaky delivery.
If you look at a european turbo petrol engine you will see that max Nm happen at very low rpm (less than 2000rpm).
The Golf GTI and BMW 135i are both examples of this.

                          Hi SP,

Do you own a GT Sport TDI or a GT TDI? I didn't think VWA bought out the GT with a TDI engine.

Actually you can look at the first seven cars. The first four from quali are the Peugeot 908s followed by three Audi R15s.

All I'm saying is that I am older and wiser now. Been there done that with the WRX's. I don't want to go around revving the living daylights out of a car any more. With a diesel you don't have to, sure it's not as fast accelerating as the cars you mentioned, but these days you just look like a d**kh**d doing that anyway!

That is why the GTD works for me and many others I suspect. It has the look and quality of the GTI, near 90% of the performance, but can travel near double the distance on a tank.
