I think we get so excited at the prospect of a new car so far in advance that it becomes a roller-coaster event which slowly drives you nuts. I'm sure the dealer made it clear to me but all I remember is I'm getting a new car the fine print probably says ETA 2012!

I'd lock it in as the official day and put the 10/11th as when pricing and brochure is put on the website along with cars being in showrooms.

In any case, I'm giving the dealer the go ahead today to order my exact specification. I won't have a launch day car, so leaves me in the situation of having to find a temp run about for however long the R takes to get here. ETA thus far is Sept/Oct. Just stuck on colour now. Starting with blue, I've come full circle after seeing lots of photos and videos. I love the blue but I think it worked better on the R32 so now thinking Grey or White.

    • Honestly at this point, i'd be expecting a discount in line with the GTI average of 10%.

That is if you are not taking one of the first and are placing an order.

Paying a premium with no discount on the first run is one thing, but on a 5 month order is not acceptable IMO.

Lol - yeah, +1 to that. I must admit that even I've been guilty of this. I've been waiting since the day my Oettinger/APR Stage II MKV Golf GTI was written off in January 2009!!! By the time I get my R, it will have almost been 2 years!

xrayshaggy - whilst I understand your frustration, that old saying of "it's not what you know but who you know" is very true. If that dude from facebook knows one of the VGA execs who have access to the car, then good luck to them. Everyone has "friends and contacts". I find it funny that you seem to now be favouring another car because you've found out that Volkwsagen executives have friends! I'm sure that BMW executives have friends too you know
For what its worth I get to 'sample' the Audis & quite often before the press get their hands on them. Thats just the way of the world. The 'friends network' has worked though as I now have one and will most likely opt for the S3 over the R too.
The late model look of the R is beginning to grow on me though i have to admit so the $$ will be the decider. Either way VAG wins.
First shipment is here of course, I think last week

                • I have to admit that my frustration with the whole "friends" situation who appear to be funny. After further conversations with the person in question who had the car it appears that although he doesn't know anyone at VW directly, he works for an oil company and no one else wanted to take the car. As this is all hear say I can't confirm this is at all true, but have no reason not to. My frustration may also come from working in an industry where you could be sacked for accpeting a companies promotional pen, so I will admit that I am well out of touch with corporate Australia.
I understand the concept of pre release cars being in Oz for VWA and local press to review the car, but it seems to me that perhaps VWA could have arranged for one car per capital city (and yes I know I have just annoyed everyone not living in a city who more often than not just get forgotten about) at least for a couple of days for the purchasing public to see. Having briefly owned a Porsche in the past, I still get invited to test drive days and model previews. Maybe I'm just annoyed more with VWA than the whole purchasing the R experience. After sending emails to 5 car companies last week to book test drives each company in the last two days have voluntered to drive to my place (I am currently carless) to pick me up for the test drive. I had to visit VW to get someone to talk to me. I was then required to come back a few days later for a test drive of the 2 models of golf I was then interested in (that's more than fair as not every dealership can ever car), but when I arrived on the pre booked day the dealer I was dealing with was on his customary day off, and neither car was available. After a couple of hours a GTi arrived and I was escorted on a drive by another young salesman who I managed to catch out on several lies. Still didn't stop him from almost insisting that I write a 5000 word essay on why I wanted to wait on the R before making a decision before he would let me leave the dealership.
Sorry about the rant. Cheaper than a shrink. I guess the big thing at the end of all this though is that I still want an R! Damn you VW!! (Insert Colonel Klink "Hogan" fist shake)
United Grey R: All the accessories (leather, not Recaro's though), S2P paddles, Kuftech DVD in motion. Carbon grill, mirrors and diffuser awaiting to be fitted.

                  • SPOTTED: Blue Golf R 5dr

                    Hey guys,

Spotted this on the back of a car transport truck with some other golf Mk6's & a Transporter van. It was on Melbourne Rd, Spotswood turning right onto the Westgate Fwy outbound @ 1.10pm today. Sorry for the VERY poor shots, but i just caught it as we began moving in the opposite direction. It's on the bottom level behind the white Transporter.

                    Black side mirrors.

                    Cheers,

                    Jayse.

Are you getting CW Dave? That's so hot right now .

I loved the DBP on my R32 but would still get dusty as quick as black.

                        • Meh... from a distance, CW could be a 77TDI...
... Blue is always an R

From a distance a Golf could be a Corolla, how far away do you look at cars anyway?

Even though I am not fond of the looks of the MK6, I have to say that the CW R looks pretty hot.

I've test driven the Blue version of the R in Sg and thought it looked ordinary. For some reason, CW on the MK6 makes it looks like a different (and better looking) car.

                              Just my 2 cents.

                              • CW would be awesome on the R.
Makes it look bigger and will surprise people even more.
It also shows each intricate detail of the car whereas black tends to hide the lines/details.

DBP would be the best colour imho.
                                However i may be biassed.
