Golf R 3 door/5 door speculation/information thread
If you order now, you'll have your R in October and if you wait till the mid June launch you will have it in December/January ....
This is very interesting news. I could probably *just* hold together long enought for a custom order. Probably be tempted to swap leather for buckets. Time to ring the dealer.
From all reports, I'm surprised at the initial stock allocation and so many manual/no option cars there are.
I cannot wait for this new BT option to be available.
Hating having the iPhone plugged in to MDI and not hearing the call through my speakers even.
Take it up with Apple, they're the ones that made that decision and won't let you put phone audio out the audio wires and force you to use bluetooth instead.
Same as they won't let you connect a iphone to an ipad for data and force you to buy the 3G version which also have restrictive plans thanks to the new new micro sim so Apple get a kickback on the data connection costs.
Strictly speaking, that's not entirely true. The Apple Headphones that come with the iPhone let you interact with the audio input and output without using Bluetooth. The controls on the headphones also allow some level of interactivity with the device via the audio socket (answer call, hang-up, play/pause music)...
Yeah I figured it would have something to do with Apple.
I havent tried yet using the AUX input on the GTI, but the same AUX facility on my Mazda 3 allowed me to have the iPhone connected via the headphone jack. If I was listening to the iPod and a call came through, it'd play through the stero and use the mic on the handset. I incorrectly assumed the GTI unit would allow this using MDI. Well once this new (well priced it seems) system is available, i'll upgrade/retrofit. Currently having to hit the speaker button on the handset (MDI does mute the music if a call comes through). It's just not loud enough.
Dave, good to see you have ordered the R (presumably) without driving it. I like your style.
It's not that big of a deal IMO. Have driven GTI's, R32 and S3. I figure the R is a mix of all 3 which suits me just fine. Some people are worried that its going to be a something it isn't and must drive first which is fair enough. I don't see the need personally.
Having ordered my r in nov 09 .
I am now being told that very limited nos are coming in and the first shipment to my dealer does not have a car that matches !!
Is this a ploy to auction off limited nos at top dollar?
What are the numbers in first shipment ?
When is next shipment due ?
as a pr excercise for someone ordering their 4th vw it has not been great .
Any answers to above or fellow sufferers to console me ?
United Grey Golf r 5 door dsg leather sunroof 19 in wheels mdi
Having ot home today from a series of test drives of BMW's and Audi's (at a friends insistance) I posted my thoughts on several cars tested today on facebook. At the end I mentioned that I still prefer the Golf R. I then recieved a reply from a friend in Sydney who informs me he was given the keys of a Golf R for a couple of days in Sydney. He doesn't work for VW, has interest of buying any type of VW let alone a Golf R. And apart from what I can see as a tenuous link of working for a oil company the only hint he will give me is that it "its not what you know, but who you know". Apart from the fact I am very serious about purchasing this car when I can get a look at it, how is it that I can't even get a date of when I may be even able to view this car? Suddenly this evening the BMW 135i Sport looks a little more attractive!
United Grey R: All the accessories (leather, not Recaro's though), S2P paddles, Kuftech DVD in motion. Carbon grill, mirrors and diffuser awaiting to be fitted.

No surprises there, the first shipment is meant to be a surprise and all pre-spec'd. So it would be a fluke if you got one that matches your spec. Part of the fun of getting one of the first ones.
This is why they should not be taking deposits on unreleased cars.
5 months was incredibly painful for my GTI - a year for an R from laying down a deposit is just ridiculous.
I thought that was their policy not to officially take them, so people shouldn't put down deposits, 2k could be in your bank for a year gaining interest instead not to mention no corp discount, bargaining power or known prices/specs..

The 135i would be a better car, worth considering now that they have DCT and as long as you don't need 5 doors.

It has been interesting dealing with VW for this car. It would be in their interest (ie selling cars) to have done everything they did differently but its not the case so we just have to grin and bear it.
@r down under - whilst I understand your frustration, this is just the way it is, it was never going to be any different, and it has never been any different. The dealer either should not have taken your deposit, or made it abundantly clear that it is a "lucky draw" as to what car you'll be able to get on the first shipment. I mean, how can you expect to actually receive "the car you want" when the specs are not released and the dealers cannot place any orders ??
xrayshaggy - whilst I understand your frustration, that old saying of "it's not what you know but who you know" is very true. If that dude from facebook knows one of the VGA execs who have access to the car, then good luck to them. Everyone has "friends and contacts". I find it funny that you seem to now be favouring another car because you've found out that Volkwsagen executives have friends! I'm sure that BMW executives have friends too you know
As for you not being able to find out a date that you can view the car... that date has been mentiond here now are few times. Saturday June 12th. That is what we currently understand the official launch date to be.
