Exactly. VW have said 'cheaper', but even if it comes in the same price as an R32, that means $61,700 on the road for the 3 door manual and go up from there. That's obviously before negotiation. But there is no way in hell VW are going to make the car $3,300 to $5,300 more expensive as fuzion was suggesting. That'd be a big damper on sales!

Would it still be $61,700 on the road with the LCT also included now?

Yep, that includes the rego, CTP, dealer delivery, GST, the new 33% LCT and stamp duty (it's for NSW - VIC will be slightly higher since you guys pay more stamp duty on cars over $57k)

Yeah, otherwise you'd just get an S3 or R36.

I also don't think Audi resale is as spectacular as he was making out either.. You pay more up front, options are a lot more, servicing etc.. Agree the S3 interior was a lot nicer than the MK5 but has dated a bit (although i dont really have a problem with it). MK6 is really just a facelift though, we shouldn't forget that.

Personally I don't see it as a simple face lift. MKV to MKVI.

Sure most of the 'stuff' underneath is the same, but the body and interior do look very different.

The interior in particular. A significant improvement over the MKV and S3.

So I may as well post this info I've been sitting on for a while....

I've heard from an 'anonymous dealer' that since the R32 was a 6-cylinder, and the new R is going to be a 4-cylinder, due to the Australian-market-views (or something like that), the R may end up with only about a $10,000 premium over the GTI.

That would mean a 3dr manual Golf R would be $48,990 + options + onroads, ranging up to the 5dr DSG Golf R for $52,990 + options + onroads.

Anyway take it for what it's worth - but sounds like VW Australia are still carefully considering the placement of the R in Australia. It could also put some merit in these claims that there won't be any negotiation on the R at all, for obvious reasons.

Yeah it's probably a bit more than a facelift but not revolutionary like MK4 -> MK5.

Corey - mate that would explain the comments in the press about it 'sitting somewhere between the GTI and existing R32'. We've all assumed that mean $1000-2000 less but it could very well be much more than that and it'd make total sense. The Australian market would question the premium when the existing model was a 6.. however the S3 has sold for years at this price point and its always been a turbo 4. Thanks for letting us know - I hope you are right and if so, I wouldn't care so much about the discounts. Christ I wish they'd make up their minds already and release the damn retail pricing.

The APR Stage 3 kit looks awesome. Keep in mind, that with that level of performance, by the time you've purchased the Stage 3 kit, full exhaust, the new brakes and suspension to handle the 300kw + 500NM of POWWWARRRRR, and through in the labour costs, you'd need to budget for around $26k. It would be a surely awesome car though, and I couldn't think of anything else south of $120k (maybe more) that'd be better

WOW if true, a very very good price set by VW.

If you account for these 4 points:

1. Going from V6 to 4 Cylinders, therefore cheaper price in the eyes of Australian buyers.

2. With the VWA CONFIRMING to the press that it would be priced between the GTI and R32, should we take that literally and assume it will be around the high 40k to low 50k mark?

3. It will tempt alot of potential GTI buyers over to the R, which will reduce the stress VWA are feeling now, with people having to wait 6 months plus for a GTI! Especially considering that VWA said there would be no supply issues with the MK6 this time...

4. With talk from VWA of Leather Sports seats being optional. We still dont know if they meant Recaro seats being optional, or leather being optional. But in all honesty, why wouldnt have he just said "Recarro's will be optional, if he meant that?".

If any VWA employee's are reading this, I will put my deposit down the day you confirm pricing that is in the high 40K to low 50K mark for the R.

It's looking more and more likely that the GTI has no chance in my garage against the R.

Keep in mind guys, that even if it does come at the $10k more than the GTI, by the time you've added your onroads and taxes etc that would still mean ~$54,500 for a base spec 3 dr manual, to $58,700 for the 5dr dsg, all the way up to ~$82,000 if you went for 5dr DSG and picked literally every option (except Electric drivers seat since the Recaro's don't have that option). But yeah... it's still far less than the ~$102,000 that you can option an S3 too!

I wouldnt be surprised if they have no idea yet.

We are only in the month of Feb. Its being released around July.

Its still another 6 MONTHS!!!! away.
