It's fairly easy to make an educated comment based on the previous models without having to drive each one.

French cars are quirky and nimble, would be great to drive but would fall down in build quality and drops value quicker than anything else. May look like a bit of a boy racer and not as good as a daily driver, but depends what you want.

I was tempted to get an XR5 Turbo but couldn't do it as Fords are **** haha.

Maybe, but should your main and determining factor for a buying a 'hot hatch' be build quality (new cars have extensive warranties remember) and resale? In terms of the Megane 250RS being too raw for the road, most Euro motoring journos have said the complete opposite after having driven them all side-by-side, ie they have tamed the 250RS down for normal road use, yet still handles and drives brilliantly.

With VWA deciding not to release the Scirroco R here, and only releasing the Golf R as a 4 door (and now the Polo GTI in DSG and 4 door only), that just leaves the Golf GTI for the rest of us who don't fit VWA's demographic profiling and assumptions that our only concern is utility (4 doors, DSG). Sorry VWA but we're not all boring, even though you think we are (4 doors/autos). Based on this, I will be giving serious consideration to the 250RS because ultimately, a hot hatch should be a hot hatch, not some boring compromise..

And that's the thing.... I hate french cars - but if they're the only ones bringing true hot hatches into Australia because Ford can't be bothered and VW only want to sell to the largest demographic by not bringing in the 3 door models - what other option do we have but to re-evaluate the other players in the market?

It's about finding something that ticks all the boxes. If you don't care about losing heaps on a car then no worries. Good to be able to sell somehting easily too, not having something noone wants.

Obviously i haven't driven one but the new Megane seems more soft and compromised than the old ones anyway, but looks better for the streets and the styling isn't as daring.

            Is that a fact now?

I doubt two less doors make the car ****loads more exciting, pretty minor in the scheme of things.

Shame we dont get a fair choice here, but the right mods can make it a hotter hatch anyway.

The 250RS will still be worth considering no argument there just depends what you want, and if you want to look like a boy racer and have ricers trying to race you.

Well, there is still no news of the Scirocco - and about the ONLY thing which has been specifically published as a direct quote from VW Australia's Media man Karl is they're only looking at the 5 door Golf R.

That must mean the Scirocco R is coming, which would do me

Some valid points, but I wouldn't go calling the GTI boring simply because it has 4 doors. Is the EVO or WRX boring because they have 4 doors?

I personally wouldn't be put off buying an R if it was only available in the 4 door variant. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. I don't think the looks of a 2 door are that much different to the 4 door, it's not like it's a coupe or anything. This is obviously subjective though.

I think if they don't bring the 2 door Golf R, VWA may be showing their hand that it's pretty likely the Scirroco R will fill that role.

                  • That's the point I was making - the Golf isn't a sleek sportscars or coupe, so 2 or 4 doors isn't that big an issue.

Plus, 4 doors adds extra functionality, if you ever need it.

                      Function > looks imho.

For you. Don't speak for others

What you still fail to realise is that one of the big things keeping the Scirocco from Australia, is the fact that it is also only a 3 door and is not a 'sleek sportscar or coupe'. The fact 5 door cars are such a big slice of the market here is why the Scirocco isn't here already.

                        • It's more sleek than the golf, but I guess people don't realize how good it looks till you see it inthe flesh.

                            • It is more sleek - but it's still a hatchback - and that's what I'm saying - Australia's attitude of a hatchback being all about functionality and therefore 5 doors being way more popular here than 3 door (unlike many European and Asian countries) is more than likely a big reason why the Scirocco isn't here already.

I also do not believe that the Golf R not being available in 3 door is any indication that they are 'making room' for the Scirocco R for the simple fact that they are also looking like not having the new Polo GTI in 3 door.

VW Australia just doesn't think Australia wants 3 door cars....

                              • I still agree that we should be given the choice of 3/5 dr GTI & Golf R's, just like how it's always been. Pretty f'd up if they don't give you that choice just so they can charge more for the Rocco.
