Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Took the pictures after a wash. Formula 1 Tint from Tint-A-Car North Melbourne. Great work from Pete and co! $295 for front tint, clear UV on the rear passengers and rear windscreen tint.

      • lol... this is why I hate photos of tint... those pictures are of apparently the factory rear tint with clear UV on them, and F1 tint on the fronts, yet the rear windows look basically painted black, despite many of us having measured the factory tint at only about 40% VLT! It's so difficiult to tell from photos :/

Yeah! It's really hard to take photos of tint! Peter said if I wanted to match the rear tint, it would make the front ones illegal. Plus, I didn't want it that dark anyway.

          • If Peter meant that is because the rear windows area already too dark:
            1) It means the rear windows are already illegal, since there is no difference in "legal tint levels" between the front and rear windows on passenger cars
            2) VW's factory tint is very inconsistent between batches, since 35% is the legal limit and it's measured as high as 42% on some member's cars.

What I think he meant was, to get the closest match, you put a tint on the existing factory tint, as well as the front windows, to get the closest match in darkness AND tonality.

But you're right, it's extremely difficult to photograph tint. And even if you're a pro photographer with the equipment and knowledge to do it right... almost no one looking at your photos has a calibrated high quality monitor to view them on anyway

              • so pondering what tint to get for my new black GTI..

Well taking it I Peter at tintacar North Melbourne on Wednesday. He recommends the F1 tint as Octane wouldnt be legal due to the already darkened windows of the golf...

                • well got my GTI done at Tint-A-Car north melbourne today.

Checked it out when I got home:

Drivers Side window - White dot right in the eyeline (fluff) (raised i.e u can feel it)
Drivers Rear - white fluff dots
Drivers Qtr Panel - White fluff dot..
Passenger side - 1 inch scratch near the mirror, other side V shaped lifting
Passenger side rear - Black fluff dot (1mm)
Rear pass Qtr - peeling along door join :\

The only part that seems ok is the rear section - but its looking like its not sealing properly along the black dots around the window?

                  Going back tomorrow morning.

                  Sigh.

---------- Post added at 08:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:53 PM ----------

Having another look, theres 5 black dots under the tint of the drivers side.

Update: Fixed now - every window replaced except the back one.

                  • melbourne tinting recommendations

G'day, can anyone recommend a Melbourne tint shop and likely cost? (at this stage still have factory tint on order for my CW GTI)

Edit: Peter quoting $345 for FI tint - seems pretty reasonable (have removed factory tint as an option so good saving)

Hey Andrew, if its not too far of a drive. try carx.com.au. They are based in Clayton and I got my CW GTI done there for about $200ish. Turn around time is about 1.5hrs. I'm pretty happy with the quality and haven't had a issue with it yet.

Great, even better- will be a good excuse to "drive in" the new engine before heading back to Castlemaine!

Once I get my car he was going to come over and tint mine.
He has done quite a few Golfs and knew exactly all the % to match it closely.
Even was able to tell me it was Solaguard HP supreme and was explaining the different colours it will produce given the front glass is more green than the rears.

If it all works out I will see if he wants his details shared out.
Just thought I would post up the info here.
More than happy with the job I had done on mine, and it has been 6 months now and I have had no issues

The guys name is Malcolm and he will come to your place (probably on a Saturday)
