Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Just a quick update for anyone who is looking for tinting around Melbourne CBD.
I just got a quote from Peter of Tint a Car, North Melbourne for my MY12 Jetta (with Sports pack - privacy glass on the rear). He recommended Formula 1 to get it matching as close as possible, while maintaining it street legal, as well as clear tints for the rear to help protect from UV etc. He quoted $295 for everything and $110/140 (i THINK - poor memory) just for the front tint.
I think it sounds like a pretty good deal. What do you guys reckon? Any experiences with Tint a Car, North Melb and particularly with Peter (didnt get his last name)?MY12 147TSI Jetta DSG | CW | Sports Pack | Sunroof | Driver Electric Seat | RCD510 | Formula 1 Tint | MFSW Paddle Shifters

That's good to hear. He sounded very nice and polite over the phone. Made me feel easy about the whole thing.

Just picked up my car from Peter of Tint a Car north Melbourne. So far so good. The staff were really friendly and Peter seemed like a great guy from the get-go. Workmanship looks great so far. Clean job. First MkVI Jetta to visit his workshop.
Unfortunately weather is a bit wet and gloomy at the moment. Needs a lil bit of sun!
Will report more and hopefully get some pics up later in the week.

LT meter on mine on front windows prior tint returned a reading of 90% (10% drop). Actually varied up to 85% !
Adding 35% film would drop it to an effective value of 25% or less
So much for numbers eh !
Most Golf glass come standard with a 75%-80% tinge to the glass so to get it to darkest legal (35%) a 40%-45% film will need to be used to keep it within the limits.
Put a 35% the glass will be around 25%
20% tint will bring it down to around 12% and so on....

Another double thumbs-up for Peter at Tint-a-Car North Melbourne. Great guy, great job, great price (he fixed up another tinter's attempt at a GTI back window - the first tinter did the tint in two halves, joined over a demister line. His reason was that it is not possible to do such a curved window in one piece. Absolute nonsense as Peter and other great tinters show, over and over again)
