Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • ps .... To anyone that has added tint to their R

    Your car is now illegal

LT meter on mine on front windows prior tint returned a reading of 90% (10% drop). Actually varied up to 85% !

Adding 35% film would drop it to an effective value of 25% or less

So much for numbers eh !

Actually, it's one of the laws which is soley based on scientific research. And much of it isn't whether you can see out of the car or not, but whether other drivers, cyclists, pedestrians etc, can see you, the driver. So yeah, unlike most laws, you can't really argue about this one (well you can, but you'd be wrong). So there is no point even starting to go into this again. If you're interested, do a search (I'm sure that Maverick pasted pages of information in the companion "Tint to match Dark Privacy Tint" thread. But there have been many discussions on the forum already, and the information is freely availabe on many sites on the internet.

Btw, the reason why the "privacy glass" is only on the rear, as many countries (and South Australia) mandate that the front passenger and driver's window needs to be 70% VLT due to the same research. The 35% on the front row is already quite generous.

Actually, it doesn't work like that

      Firstly the calculation isn't 35-(100-90)=25 (%VLT).
      The calculation would be 0.35 * 0.90 = 0.315 (or 31.5% VLT).

BUT that is overlooking the fact that no glass is 100% VLT. Thus, any good quality tint's rating is measured on a pane of glass!
For example, the primary tint that Rob uses is Solar Gard Australia Automotive Tint. As you can see from the chart there it states straight up that it's measured on 3mm clear glass. In other words, 35% VLT tint takes into account that standard glass isn't really 100% VLT and therefore the tint on its own might only be 39% until it's applied to the glass etc.

      • Measurement after application disproves your comment (and here I got my number from)

A so-called legal tint was illegal after application

I know you are justifying your 35% tint so I see where you are coming from

Read the so called research you mention

        It is flawed

Can't believe how much misiformation there is propagated on forums.

        • So what was your measurement(s)?

If you put a 10% tint on the rear windows (which are about 40% from the factory), your method would mean you end up with -30% - which obviously doesn't happen. But it's not 0 either, as you can still see through. The maths I provided is correct. BUT if you actually looked at the link, you would see that they said variances occur.

As you already claimed in your first post, you measured 90% to 85% on an untinted glass.
So you haven't disproved anything. In fact, you're just propogating this "misinformation" you can't believe is out there...

Edit: In addition to what was your measurements, which specific product did you have installed and to which windows?

This the first time I have ever had a perfect tint job - more than 20 cars

Was lucky to have a warm sunny day after tint was done which cured the film

Will get a chance to test the tint in today's wet weather

Glad we got the level of tint suggested. Looks fantastic in real life and makes the look of the car perfect

Rob is certainly a pro. No trim damaged, no mess.

              • 2/3rds through our trip away

Tint has been great. Not too dark at all, even on a rainy night.

Reversing not an issue. Has done a great job of cutting glare from headlights from behind.

Looks fantastic on the Candy White and really improves the look of the black trim

With a front sunshield up, parked at a local shopping centre in full sun all day, car was not hot inside at all.

Glad we went with Robs suggestion of tint type and specs.

                      Ha, fair enough.

There's a tinted white one getting around my neck of the woods with a similar number plate.

                      • Mosman ain't my cup of tea mate

One minor thing with the tint though, makes the front side windows reflective so you see the side air vents reflected back at you

Used to it now. Any tint does it.
