  • This has been done and shown to be not problematic, however, you need to buy new headlight surrounds to suit an HID kit...

    • On a partly related point... I notice Subaru Foresters still have reflector HID lights. Always wondered how they do it? Anyone know?

Subaru Foresters, Honda Accord Luxury widebody (the Thailand made), old Lexus GS300, old Lexus IS300, old Honda Legend; these are the cars that I am aware of that come with HIDs factory fitted in specially designed reflector headlights instead of elipsodial lenses headlights.

Out of my own curiousity I have had a very close look at the Forester HIDs headlights as my bro in law drives one, the HID bulb tube part is covered half way down and the reflector angles are different to a normal halogen reflector angles. Also comes with the jet washer too.

Conclusion, the reflectors and bulbs are specifically designed for HID from the factory, hence the beam pattern is proper and directed, not smeared everywhere and not blinding any oncoming drivers.

          • VW Golf MK6 GTI LED HEAD LIGHTS XENON DRL - HAS ANYONE CONVERTED A NORMAL HOLOGENGTI

Hi Guys, i really like the new Golf GTI Daytime running light headlights.

They come in the xenon light update in 2011 golf gti or in the adidas.

I have seen a couple of people trying to sell just the casing but, what do i exactly need to convert a normal hologen 2010 GTI to have a full set of xenons and these DRL?

Any suggestions on a full kit option not just the casing?

            • To legally retrofit Bi-Xenon lights to a halogen equipped vehicle is going to set you back an awfully large amount of money.

You need to fit a self levelling system as well as headlight washers and the wiring will need to be updated as well as VCDS coding to allow the car to know it has bi-xenon lights.

All of this costs time and money and is easily going to be double if not triple the cost of purchasing hte Xenon's as a manufacturer's option.

              • ok understand, do u think u can just change the case and have the halogen lights, and the DRL LED's? has any one done this?

                • I merged your thread to this one, since the "main topic" of converting Halogen to HID/Xenon is covered here already.
As for the sub-topic of putting DRL LEDs inside your existing halogen headlight assembly - I suggest you don't. I can't be bothered looking up whether there are legal statements/regulations already in place within the RTA/motoring authorities/ADR regulations about this type of thing, but generally anything which is a "safety device" or effects your safety which you modify then requires "engineering". i.e. If you change your brake discs, you're meant to get the car engineered. I can't imagine it'd be any different if you were to start modfiying the internals of your headlight assembly. You've then got all the potential insurance and legal issues if you were involved in an accident at night with "modified headlights".

Just do what the other people do and put a LED strip under your lights, or in the grill, or intake, or something like that

I'd recommend that you don't, having just been through pulling the factory bi-xenon headlights apart I can say that it's truly one of the worst jobs you can do that runs a high risk of screwing your headlights. BMW have easy to fit replacement acylic headlight covers, Volkswagen have glued in headlight covers that require the use of an oven, heat gun, dremel, knives, trim removal tools, bandaids and strength to get apart. The Mark VI headlights are from what I understand assembled the same way.

                      • Hi jamesstampo, I merged your thread with this existing one.

As you'll find, there are numerous kits around, but the basic summary of the situation is, almost all are illegal in Australia. Unlike the USA where leveling motors and headlight washers are not required, in Australia you need both. For the leveling motors to work, even if they're included in your kit (I didn't notice it), you need sensors in the front and rear of the car. The headlight washers are not mentioned or displayed at all.

Best advice you can get is, if you want Xenon, tick the factory option. Far cheaper and easier than doing it yourself (legally).

                        • thanks corey understand! when you say washers, you mean the small washers below the lights, similar to the windscreen washers?

                          Comment

                          • Yep, exactly. Because HID lights are typically projection rather than refraction, small amounts of dirt is all that's required to cause "black spots" in your headlight beam, and also cause unwanted reflections which can startle other drivers. So HID projection lights require headlight washers by law in Australia.

                            • its a pity there is not a Golf 6 projector headlight around really as ive driven around with 5000k HIDs in my SS ute with projector lenses for yrs now never been flashed (pointed them lower) or asked by police & were a stunning difference

definately dont use HIDs in reflectors not desighned for them though

                              • Hi guys,

Just thought I would share, that I too stumbled across the replacements headlamps which the yanks are buying for their Halogen fitted cars.
VWVortex.com - VW MK6 Golf HID Reps for Halogen Equipped Cars!
Anyway my excitment was short lived after learning they are only for LHD cars. But that didn't stop me wanting a pair, so after a month of emailing numerous suppliers in China who sell these I finally tracked down the company that actually makes these. (Thank you Google translator). Then after another week of begging they have agreed to custom make me a set for RHD.

Annyway they are about 20 days away, so happy to update on my progress if anyone else is interested in these headlamps for their own rides.
Read this guys review on them if you want to learn more:

PS. i know about the Auto Leveling and Washer requirements for xenons. Might retrofit those too.
