Looking at what you want, the Octavia has you pretty well covered.

• DSG Liftback/wagon at $37,705 / $39,810 on road respectively

• Front/rear sensors at $990

• metallic paint at $630

• MDI at $270 (?? - I used VW price)

And you're all set. Assuming negligable stamp duty and total is $41,700 driveaway for the wagon without any haggling. You get acceleration 0-100km/h in 7.8 seconds, fuel consumption 6.7L/100km, dual zone air-con, auto headlights and wipers, multifunction leather steering wheel, 560/580 litres boot space, and the neatest touch-screen audio (and parking/climate control) system there is, the RCD510 (aka Bolero).

So it looks like the Octavia wagon is pretty much lineball with the Golf wagon, which surprises me to be honest. I would have thought Skoda will be cheaper than their VW cousins. In any case, all this is pure conjecture until VW puts out the pricelist.

Bigger boot, faster, possibly cheaper to buy, a bit more exy to run but services might be cheaper...its definitely lining up as my #2 choice.

Why would the Skoda be more expensive to run? The most expensive part is depreciation & the Skoda will be far worse than the Golf initially buit if you are on a 10 year ownership cycle then depreciation wont be an issue.

Haven't got my receipts handy but servicing is similar dollars to the Golf. No big issue - every 15,000km/12 months, whatever is first. IIRC 15k was ~$250; 30k was ~$330.

So 90kW TSI DSG Golf = $40,750NZ / 32,600AUD
Aussie it is $28,490AUD so $4K less. Not Apples to Apples exactly (NZ has climatic aircon) but and interesting match. So I am guessing cheaper in Aus.

OIC. I don't really consider fuel to be a major expense. I do 25,000km a year and am avging 6.7L/100. At $1.25/L for 98ron it's $2100 a year for fuel (seems too cheap - /checks.... 2008 = $2052; 2009 = $1866 but I was OS for 4 weeks).

I drive under near ideal conditions. Best tank ever was 6.1L/100; worst is 8.0L/100 twice - both the last week of December (08 & 09) when my wife was driving & lots of suburban work.

A bigger engine doesn't necessarily mean significantly more fuel consumption. Bigger factors are where you drive & how much you flex the right foot.

BTW: mine also uses a bit more fuel these days as it has been remapped to ~145kw & 350Nm. avg 6.5 before the remap, now 6.9 because I give it a bit.

The main webpage states that the wagon is 'only a few short weeks away' which i think would mean a march launch so get in touch with your local dealer as they would almost certainly have the pricing.

I must admit the Skoda (although initially my suggestion) would not make an attractive proposition if it is the same price or close. A skoda is great value when 4k cheaper with more features and by all accounts the media are reporting the VW wagon will start at sub 30k for the 1.4ltr, rumoured to be $27,990 in manual.

I noticed Skoda have also added leather standard in some Passat models which also makes the Skoda around the same price in the Superb. It seems really illogical as i would think that most people spending this sort of money would rather go with the brand that is a success rather than take a punt on something that might work here in OZ

No because both cars were roughly the same price Superb Elegance Vs Passat but the Superb has leather as an option and the VW dealer who serviced my wifes car tells me the 125kw Passat now has leather as standard???

So nothing to be confused about it was as a wrote it, however in saying this i just downloaded a pdf brochure from the website that says leather is still an option for the Passat so it maybe just wasted words anyhow.

After having it pointed out to me (thanks coreying ) and taking the time to reading my own words carefully it appears i am an absolute idiot!! I'm sure though you can decipher through what had written and get the general gist. The point i make is that they are almost squeezing Skoda out even though it is the same group which seem a bit weird as they would have to be a bit off the ball to think Skoda would survive if not a consistent 3-4k less.

It's weird that VW have taken this decision, you would have thought that Skoda could have found a point of difference in this fast growing segment (med-sized wagon) and it has been guzzumpt by VW milliseconds after it gets some runs on the board.

It's unusual to see a manufacturer being predatory towards its own product, it seems almost cannibalistic

The Superb is cheaper than a Passat and larger. Longer overall and a longer wheelbase that leads to much more rear legroom on the Superb.
