In the real world diesels are less sensitive to how they're driven so the majority of owners are more likely to get closer to the official value with a diesel than with a petrol engine. Have a look at the values on the following web sie and you'll see what I mean.

One of the reasons for this is that diesels are efficient over a broader % of their rev range as they don't suffer the pumping losses that petrol engines do with light throttle openings when they are trying to suck air past a closed throttle (diesel engines throttle the fuel instead of the air)

What I'm saying is that in the real world the gap between the Mazda diesel and the Golf petrol is likely to be greater than 0.2 unless you have a economical driving style.

As pologti18t said, you're adding options on the Golf which the Mazda won't even have as an option...

But the other thing I wonder, is have you actually driven the Mazda 6 and the Golf 118TSI ?

The Mazda has 7 more KW, but the VW has 14 more torque, and over a huge rev range - which makes the feel of the engine so much different. Then to rub salt into the wound, the Mazda uses a whopping 2.3 litres more fuel!!!

Yeah I have driven a Mazda 6 sedan and my parents have a MK5 GTI, so no I haven't done a proper comparison yet - but neither the VW or Mazda wagon's are out yet. I figure the VW will be more to my liking indeed but the reason the Mazda has take my interest is... (and this is all without knowing the prices ok for the 25EX Sports Wagon which I suspect will be too pricey but until we see prices I am keeping a place marker for it)

Now a straight Yen to Aus $ conversion of the top end Sports Wagon base prices is 2,750,000 which gives $34,303. Even at $10K more for dealer, GST, taxes I still have money for a few nice safety options.

But I have not done analysis of current Japanese to Aussie street figures so really dont know if $10K is enough - it might well be $15-20K extra

@prise - yeah, I understand how diesels work, no need for me to look up other sites. But also, the 118TSI is also very well known for being quite easy to meet the rated figures - possibly due to the fact it's both supercharged and turbocharged.

@midlifecrisis - yeah, but the current and previous Mazda's are made in Japan and the MKV Golf in South Africa, yet the Mazda's quality was not any better than the Golf. As for that 2L DISI motor they're releasing, are there any cars with it in Australia yet? I'd have to drive it before I would change my opinion about Mazda's engine's being crap compared to VW's

If you're looking at the Maz 6 - you may as well buy the Mondeo Wagon. Diesel will be out soon and car is pretty similar but cheaper.

That said, I'd get the VW because..... it's a VW, not a Mazda or a Ford
