In the real world diesels are less sensitive to how they're driven so the majority of owners are more likely to get closer to the official value with a diesel than with a petrol engine. Have a look at the values on the following web sie and you'll see what I mean.

Use Spritmonitor.de, the online gas mileage calculator and database, to determine the fuel consumption of your vehicle and compare it with others.

One of the reasons for this is that diesels are efficient over a broader % of their rev range as they don't suffer the pumping losses that petrol engines do with light throttle openings when they are trying to suck air past a closed throttle (diesel engines throttle the fuel instead of the air)

What I'm saying is that in the real world the gap between the Mazda diesel and the Golf petrol is likely to be greater than 0.2 unless you have a economical driving style.

But the other thing I wonder, is have you actually driven the Mazda 6 and the Golf 118TSI ?

        SNIP
The Mazda has 7 more KW, but the VW has 14 more torque, and over a huge rev range - which makes the feel of the engine so much different. Then to rub salt into the wound, the Mazda uses a whopping 2.3 litres more fuel!!!

The 118TSI in manual is even only 0.2 litre per 100 from matching the Mazda Diesel wagon.
Yeah I have driven a Mazda 6 sedan and my parents have a MK5 GTI, so no I haven't done a proper comparison yet - but neither the VW or Mazda wagon's are out yet. I figure the VW will be more to my liking indeed but the reason the Mazda has take my interest is... (and this is all without knowing the prices ok for the 25EX Sports Wagon which I suspect will be too pricey but until we see prices I am keeping a place marker for it)

        New 2.0L direct injection engine

"Improvements to driving performance include updated power steering and suspension settings that have resulted in better handling and straight-line stability at high speeds. With newly optimized front and rear suspension, the freshened Atenza also realizes a stable, more premium quality ride and enhanced comfort."

"Mazda’s adaptive front lighting system (AFS) with bi-xenon headlights is a newly adopted safety feature. The headlights automatically swivel to follow the road ahead and improve nighttime visibility "

"The Sport and Sport Wagon rear lights have clear inner covers and light-emitting diodes (LEDs)."

"Bold black leather seats and decoration panels with a sporty and refined silver- hairline finish come as standard equipment on the 25EX model grade"

        New gearboxes

        17s standard, 18's option (I think)

        A 4WD option...

"A Bose® sound system with eight speakers was exclusively developed for the Atenza. It delivers clear and dynamic sound to all occupants in the cabin. It is equipped with Bose’s original driving noise compensation system, AudioPilotTM." comes standard on higher end

        Interesting safety gadgets additional options
        > "At speeds over 60 kilometers per hour, the Rear Vehicle Monitoring (RVM) system detects vehicles approaching from behind and alerts the driver. "
        > "During emergency braking at speeds above 50 kilometers per hour, the Emergency Signal System (ESS) rapidly flashes the hazard warning lights to alert following drivers. ESS is standard equipment on all model grades."
        > "Mazda’s Pre-crash Safety System detects oncoming obstacles, alerts the driver and, if necessary, automatically applies the brakes and pre-tensions the seatbelts to reduce the risk of injury. The Radar Cruise Control System uses a radar sensor to measure the speed and distance of the vehicle in front and automatically controls acceleration and deceleration to maintain a preset distance. "

"A push-button ignition system, where the driver can start and stop the engine without having to insert a key,"

Now a straight Yen to Aus $ conversion of the top end Sports Wagon base prices is 2,750,000 which gives $34,303. Even at $10K more for dealer, GST, taxes I still have money for a few nice safety options.

But I have not done analysis of current Japanese to Aussie street figures so really dont know if $10K is enough - it might well be $15-20K extra

        Made in Japan not Mexico

        • @prise - yeah, I understand how diesels work, no need for me to look up other sites. But also, the 118TSI is also very well known for being quite easy to meet the rated figures - possibly due to the fact it's both supercharged and turbocharged.

@midlifecrisis - yeah, but the current and previous Mazda's are made in Japan and the MKV Golf in South Africa, yet the Mazda's quality was not any better than the Golf. As for that 2L DISI motor they're releasing, are there any cars with it in Australia yet? I'd have to drive it before I would change my opinion about Mazda's engine's being crap compared to VW's

          • The MAzda 6 here will still use the 2.5L petrol engine. In fact i think the touring wagon will be petrol.

Looks like the 2.5L will remain unchanged.

                    Mazda is always less interesting
It's a shame though - why should Australia have to put up with their old, unpowerful, ineffecient engines?!

                            • If you're looking at the Maz 6 - you may as well buy the Mondeo Wagon. Diesel will be out soon and car is pretty similar but cheaper.

That said, I'd get the VW because..... it's a VW, not a Mazda or a Ford
