Go the VMRs with your carbon steel, they just ROCK. I think the black wheels look better on lighter colors, which is why I'll be going black on my CW TSI
Current drive:2016 Golf GTI 40 Years in Pure White
I think black wheels really only look good on a very bright colour - white, yellow etc. However, I feel that black, whether on the wheels or on the car body, can 'hide detail', which is something I don't like.
Rather than straight black, I prefer 'diamond cut' or 'shadow chrome' or things like that. If if it has black spokes, then have a chrome rim, or body coloured rim etc.
I agree completely.
You see it even more on the bodywork of a car.
Black hides the detail, hence why i will be going gunmetal v710's on my ride.
Yeah I agree, black can be a bad choice if you want to highlight the form of the wheel for sure.
I really like the shape of these (cant post picks so link will work hopefully)
But I am dubious about the whole black on the Red background of the car body, would be interested in asking if I can get the lip painted red to match the car like in the APR Mk6, have to wait and see when I get around to the purchase, I think these would look fantastic with the red highlight on the car

On my Tornado Red MKV GTI, I had the Oettinger Type RE in 'charcol silver' and then tied the colour into the car by painting the area under the rear valance (between the quad exhaust pipes) in the same colour.
Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrcs are the way to go for quality tyres.
Conti's are known for their poor treadwear = less traction = need to buy new tyres more often.
Apologies for bumping an old thread but I just wanted to respond to the above now that I have my GTI. Funnily enough, it's fitted with Continental Sport Contact 2's..
I tried searching for other threads on tyres for the GTI but couldnt find what I was looking for. So far (whilst its been mostly raining the past 2 weeks), i'm not over the moon, nor am I dissapointed with the CSC2 on the GTI. They're quiet and feel nice and planted in the wet, but in the dry they do not grip as well as i'd like. Having the car modified to Stage I or II is only going to put more pressure on them to perform.
Plans are to change my wheels still and most likely move to 19" which would mean new tyres aswell - and from what I can tell the Goodyear Asymetrical seem to be the tyre of choice lately.
Michelin now have the PS3's, and they also have their merrits, but I agree, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric still seems to be where it's at. Even if the PS3's are slightly better, the Goodyear is available much cheaper - especially when sourced from Tirerack.com
I thought about the F1s from tirerack but for the money in the end there wasn't much difference between local and import when gst and duty were added to the shipping and purchase price.
The local guys told me that the F1s were going out but not sure if they were spinning a story for a quick sale.
In the end i went for the PS3s from a local dealer and couldn't be happier. The wet stopping power is fantastic and actually after being behind an accident on Saturday morning they have paid for themselves. As far as the dry I have to say they are pretty good no feel of walking that some people complain about and they seem pretty grippy when needed. They are better I'd say than the RE050s that came with my GTI and cheaper than the 18s in the RE050s by $100 a corner.
Only done around 1,000km on them so wear and longevity I can't comment on.

I findi it interesting that you have CSC2's on a Mk6 GTI as I had them on my Mk5 GTI and when they were replaced in Sept 2008 CSC2's had been replaced by CSC3's. So does this mean that some Mk6 GTI's could be running around with old stock tyres. Not a real issue as I really liked both the CSC2's & CSC3's.

Where did you source your PS3's locally, and how much were they?

Jay: yes sourced the MTMs through Tuning World the Aussie reps. I originally was just running stock suspension but recently bought 10ds old H&R Clubkit which dropped it about 10-15mm.
Coreying: sourced the PS3s through my local tyre place which recently became a part of the tyre power mob. Was quoted $500 for 18" F1s and paid $400 for the 18" PS3s (was quoted around $450 ea elsewhere)
