After my rant about leather is better, this time i'll be getting cloth. The car was pre-spec'ed and to be honest wont miss it in QLD that much. Seat heaters aren't necessary (perhaps two cold mornings a year) and agree the Jacky cloth is a classic part of GTI's. $3300 is pretty steep for partial leather/vinyle and if i ever get them retrimmed could do it in a better quality leather, colour of my choice and maybe even get something that breathes with the small holes.

I've had leather in my current car for the past 6 years, and despite having young family I've decided to go with the cloth. I've found leather to be too slippery, hot in summer, cold in winter, and not as luxurious as I'd expected.

Plus, the Jacky interior gives me a another reason not wear anything under my kilt.

would you really trust a non genuine reupholstery job? personally i wouldnt let them near my car. Im yet to see a car fitted with non genuine leather to be of suitable standard. Sure old cars can get away with it but a new golf?

There's an upholsterer in East Perth that does truly excellent work. When my old MGF roof was slashed (twice), the insurance companies sent the car there. I saw some of the aftermarket leather and vinyl jobs on new and old cars. Beautiful. I understand the hesitation, but if you find the right place, you won't be disappointed.

I've seen some great re-trims and some terrible one's. You just have to do lot's of research.

I love leather interiors but when I got my GTI, it came with the cloth trim. I didn't have time to spec the car as I needed it by the end of Dec 2009.

I've decided that by the end of this year, I'll be getting it re-trimmed in leather, more than likely red. I'll be photoshoping some designs and I'm even thinking of incorporating some small pieces of the "Jacky" cloth into it. Not sure where and how but I'll give it a crack!

As I get closer to doing it, I'll post up some pics and ask for peoples thoughts

Sure, I wouldn't go to a crap place but the one Byza went to does all the high end cars, Ferarri & Porsche etc. His seats look great too.

                hrmm,I prefer Leather.
I think most with baby seats would agree...
I dont know about others, but spending close to 50K and ending up with the "T"acky upholstery seems a bit underdone.

I've always found leather easier to maintain. dust gets seenand vacced up easier, and doesnt all dust up when you hit it.. crude way of checking its cleanliness, but works for me...

So I prefer leather, but then again, I prefer hardwod floors, and not carpet

Regarding leather, I have in my last 3 leather equipped cars, NEVER conditioned nor treated them. And Nope, never had an issue. in the cars that I had treated/conditioned/nourished, i ended up with the cracks and splits.
An upholsterer once told me is that all you need is some clean, warm waterdampened cloth.. nothing more, nothing less.
More opportunites have been lost from indecision, rather than wrong decision....

+1, there's no need to use anything else.

Yeah - that's what I was also told by italian leather upholsterer's for home furniture, and it's certainly worked out in the home for hundreds of years.
But does that give a seat which may be exposed to sunlight, massive tempurature changes, and the potential constant dryness of airconditioning, the protection it needs to last 5 to 10 years in a car?

                    • The leather (not discounting man made material that looks like leather that is also in there) that is used in your car would be very different to the kind of leather an Italian maestro would use for home furniture.

My current car's black leather interior is six years old, only ever maintained using a wet chamois, and looks exactly like it when it was new.
