Some will argue that a Stage 1 tune will improve the GTI but the same will be said of the R. You will need to spend more than $5K to improve the GTI to a point where it will surpass the R with an $800 stage 1 tune(which you can't actually). So the R is better value IMO.
If I was a MkVI GTI owner, I'd be kicking myself now for not waiting those few extra months before the introduction of the R. And as we have seen recently, many will try to justify their decisions by putting down or playing down how good the R is at every opportunity.
