Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

How's the power down? Much wheelspin? I doubt the existing traction control can deal with it. Any ideas on the actual increase on stock kilowatts/newton metres?

Please go to the Tuning and Performance (inc ECU upgrades). Those questions have been asked numerous times there and answered many many times more...

      • Fuel consumption c**p after DSG upgrade

I recently had my DSG software upgraded to 'cure' the clutch shudder in 1st/2nd.

Car now upshifts at higher revs, doesn't change into 7th until 70 km/h and downshifts into 3rd for engine braking when going downhill.

Athough much more driveable (especially in traffic) it's killed my fuel consumption. Used to get 600 km per tank (mostly commuting) now only getting 400 km

What recourse do I have with VW when one of the selling points of the Golf is its economy???

        • we had something similar with a holden Captiva Diesel. It made droning noises from the auto which was cured by a TCU software update. The economy went from 8L/100km to 11L/100km. When we complained we were basically told to suck it up.

Maybe you'll have better luck with VW.

            i do flog mine a lot though : )
Haha! wow.. ease up on the throttle! yeah not sure mate, lowest I had was probably about 530-550km to the tank. I find that I get a bit more K's out of Shell than BP. I get an evenish combination of freeway and city/stop-start traffic. I don't hammer it heaps, but I give it a good flogging every now and then.

Having the DSG though you might be more prone to giving it that bit extra here and there where I might not in the manual.. or should that work the other way around?! lol

            • I'm getting around 680km out of a tank, that said, I'm spending a fair bit of time driving in a spirited manner.

Edit: Car is a 2011 MY12 Golf GTI 5dr Manual.

              • maybe its just summer and the use of air con. my tank usually gives me 840km (shown on the MFD) but lately the most it shows is 750km. driving style, conditions etc has all been more or less the same.

                • Well the R surprised me this weekend. Up until now, the best it would do was 600km on a tank on the Freeway/Highway. We spent the weekend at Thredbo, and I was pleasantly surprised by 700km for the tank when we got back to Canberra and topped up. The mighty R got a really good workout on the mountain roads (which were infested with charity bike riders everywhere so lots of slow then go) and I did not spare the horses I can assure you. Upshifts on boost with the sunroof open are accompanied by the DSG 'whump', which is very satisfying even the ball and chain commented it sounded good.

I'm not certain why the sudden improvement, but I have a few theories. I think part is because it has run in, now it's done just over 5000km. I also think the Monaro highway run at 100, rather than 110 on the Hume also made a difference.

                    • Drove to Sydney and back yesterday. Got stuck in traffic for about 20-30mins (bloody Sydney - i dont know how you guys live there).

Anyway, by the time i got home the car had covered 360km with a/c running all the time. Still have half a tank to go.

Fuel consumption isnt great (a tank that could hold another 5-10 litres wouldnt go astray) but i rarely drive the car so it doesnt bother me too much.

Oh yeah, trip meter says 647kms travelled and I'm still yet to hit the 'fuel light' as per the gauge!

                        • You've done well there mate. About 500-550km is all i can get from my R and thats relatively easy driving with freeway cruising. Around town its 350-400 if youre lucky.

This was the best I could do....705.6km with 25km in reserve.

                            Refill was 55.59l = 7.87L/100km.

                            Running BP Ultimate.

                            • Yeh i only use BP Ultimate in mine too. I can only dream of getting 700km from a tank...........

Most of my driving is short-ish trips around town and my average consumption hovers around the 11.0L/100km mark. It gets better if i do a run down to Sydney where it sits on about 8.0 - 8.5L/100km on the freeway.

I use the 'fuel log' android app to track consumption. No figures yet of course.
Any update on this? I'd be interested to see how a non-GTi/R fares on consumption - no one else seems to be posting (apart from hentaiboy with his DSG issue - I wonder if the 118 update to stop the piston melting increases consumption too).

I find that once the MFD shows range under 100km, the remaining range drops off far quicker than actual mileage which is a bit unnerving if you are in the country and pushing the range.
