+1. That is one damn good looking wagon. If I had to have one, 19" VMR 701s would be going straight on.

    • are those replica wheels being sold over ebay - are they any good? e.g. replica RS4, replica R32 etc?

      Comment

      • Its prob best to inspect them before you buy as the quality can vary and the detail could be lacking. As for functionality as a wheel, they should have no problems.

Dont forget companies like VMR, Avant Guarde and Miro make essentially replicas of other wheels and they are popular in the US.

I might be wrong, but I am confident I'm not, but the 3 door version's doors are the same length as the 5 door's front doors.

          • Nope, the 3 door Golf's doors are quite a bit longer than the 5 door front doors.
This is one of my main complaints about the 5 door Golf, is that the B Pillar is too far forward and obscures my peripheral vision, making me feel closed-in. I've driven 3 door hatches, and 2 door coupes (with and without a B-pillar), plus 4 door large sedans or wagons, so for me to get into a 5 door Golf feels quite strange due to the B Pillar being right beside my head. The 3 door Golf's are just so much more "open".

The other thing is that the door trim (arm rest etc) on the inside of the doors in the 5 door is so much shorter and seems to finish way too early... or at least it does in comparison to the 3 door.

Many people don't seem to have any clue what I'm talking about when I mention these points this though, so maybe they're just used to it...

            • having driven 3 coupes before, I found that trying to reach the seatbelt can be a pain, with the exception of the later V35 had a 'hoop' that can be tilt up to bring the seatbelt a lot closer to the driver for easy reach. the hoops can be a potential cause of seatbelt buckle face scratcher, though, if back passenger getting in/out and forgot to push the hoops down... now, in a 5dr, the seatbelt I found are quite close to the b-pillar, making it hard to 'pry' out to grab and pull when putting them on. can't imagine on the 3dr, as added distance towards the back of the car means it'll even be harder to grab (unless they're supplied with the 'hoop') - which means I will need a body with the flexibility of either a beijing acrobat performer or a ballet dancer, and finger nails longer than Freddie Kruger to quickly grab the seatbelt on 3doors.

even at one occassion my parents grabbed my driver side seatbelt when he's sitting beside me, thinking its for his use in the back seat! that was in either the lancer coupe or r33 I couldn't remember... then the constant pittance seeing either one of them labouring to get out of the back seat through the passenger front door in a coupe, as those old bones might be quite sore...

being a kind hearted person I've decided not to get anymore coupes or 3dr, as with a 14mth in the house, both side of the parents will often be visiting, more so like 3-4 time in a year in total...

              • If you're not flexible enough to grab the seatbelt in a 3 door, why not reach for it BEFORE you get in the car? One of the tricks is to place it over the right side bolster of the seat, then when you're in the car you just have to lean forward a touch and pull the seatbelt around your shoulder.

As you've noted, the 3 door has that slight issue due to the B Pillar being back too far for some, but the 5 door has the issue that since the B Pillar is right beside the seat, the buckle can be hard to grab anyway (this is exactly what I've experienced in my 5 door loaner cars)

                • I found hooking it over the bolster of the seat oftens slip in the v35 (although its got hoops so its not so bad of an issue),
not sure haven't tried in the GTI yet but having b-pillar closer it has its benefit. lucky I had my RH finger nails kept a bit longer for doing arpeggios on my guitar... that helps the wandering hand to get a good grab

Yeah u have to look closely to tell the differences. All the models i.e. mk1-mk6 the 3 door and 5 door chasis length is the same. Its just the longer front doors that make 3 door golfs appear shorter. Having owned both types in the mk3 u can definately tell its the same length when looking at the inside space.

I didn't think the chassis was longer or shorter. I just didn't think VW would bother moving the B-Pillar for the poor man's 3 door version that's all.

                      • Well, VW definitely do move the B-Pillar for the 3 door version, as do most manufacturers...

                        • Prob because if they kept the b pillar where it was, it would look weird, almost panel van like. Im just glad that vw are one of the few manufacturers (esp in aus) that make 3 door and 5 door variants.
