Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf mk6 multi issues

Hi all, am new here and a girl so please be nice!! Am hoping to get some advice before I take my lil golf to the mechanics. Yesterday without warning my car wouldn’t start. The display was telling me to put in park or neutral, obviously it was in park when I tried to start. I worked out how to lift the cover thing on the gear lever and move in to neutral but still didn’t start. My neighbour disconnected the battery for about 30 minutes and hooked it back up and hey presto it started. Took her for a spin around the block and all was good. Went to work this morning, no issue, about to head out for lunch and the same issue. I got my friend to unplug the battery again for about 15-20 minutes and again she started. I jump in to go home and get there no problem. After an hour I needed to go out and the same damn thing!!

Any tips or info before I walk in to the mechanics with dumb chick written on my forehead. Lol.

Hi and welcome. It’s possible that the microswitch in your gear selector is faulty - its a somewhat common issue on the automatic Golfs and basically what happens is the car doesn’t realise that its in Park and therefore wont start.

The microswitch can be replaced, assuming that is the problem.

Where abouts in Melbourne are you? Should be able to recommend a good VW mechanic if we know what are of the city you are in?

Thanks Lucas, turned out to be the TCM, put another mechatronic unit in and lo and behold after less than 200kms, spanner flashing comes up again. I’m in south Morang and have taken it to a reputable trans specialist.
