They wash them so they look good when you pick them up.
Ovens dry up the solvent (which is a dilutant in paint)to make it dry to the touch. If you get a repair done at a panel shop if you are not careful you can push the paint with your finger or dent it with your fingernail. There is a chemical reaction in paint that takes months to fully cure. 3 months on a boat is a long time I know, & we all cant wait to show off our new wheels just after a wash. Unfortunatly this is the only technology we have in solvent based paint at the moment(water based do not stand up to UV radiation to well). If anyone wants to do an experiment on thier new car (in an inconspicuous place of course & not on the painted plastic)sink their thunbnail into the paint and post your results. There are washing technique threads here somewhere. If you follow these you should be ok just be gentle on the paint for the first couple of weeks, and if you can, resist the urge to wax for a month or so.
