Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Good to see the mk5 is still being cared for!

    How many kms on yours?

I've switched to a heavier weight oil (5w40) which doesnt seem to consume as much as the 5w30 recommended.

    • 224,050km on it.
I rarely have to top it up. Always used 504/507 spec oil. I found the Castrol works best, other brands seem to burn a little and may need 1litre between 15,000km changes. Castrol makes it the full year with only a little drop on the dipstick.

Thermostat and EGR are the only issues to resolve.

        • I finally replaced the sway bar bushes today.
          The bars is 21.7mm.
Yes it can be done without removing the bar or dropping the subframe. Drilling out the swaged bit of the bracket was the a bit fiddly.
90min is enough time, unless you find your 12mm drill bit is dull and need to dash out to Mitre 10.

I took it for a run on the speed bump road, 60km/h and not a sound.

          • I replaced the EGR a few weeks back. Finally no more CEL.
But once it started working, it then exposed an issue with the PCV return pipe having a hole. Such a huge amount of vacuum on those lines it sounded like a steam engine.
Some silicone tape as a fix for now, the new hose is on back order.

Still need to find time to do the thermostat.

              • got the above unit replaced with the mackay from super cheap auto of all places, anyone used the powerflex inserts with the oem mounts before?

also replaced my old leaky rad with a csf unit, word of warning they are not a bolt-in replacement for our gti's are the silly o-ring flange thingos on the oem intercooler are too big and block the unit from fitting properly
i ended up finding a 38mm thick intercooler replacement from a tiguan to slot in and plumb up(cut off the metal ends on the oem hoses)
