  • Replacing air filter?

How often would replacing the air filter be needed? As far as I know it's never been done on my 08 GTI.
I've seen that supercheap auto have a Ryco filter for $27 and a BMC for $164. I'm a supporter of "you get what you pay for" but it seems like such a jump in price can't really reflect a product 6 times the quality.

    Should be done every 45K.

Genuine VW filter is about $45.

The BMC will be a washable "high performance" unit. I don't think they do a thing.

      Replace every 45-60k

this is about the cheapest you'll get but I don't know what brand it is

Bit more expensive than Brad's suggestion, but Mann is a good quality german brand.

If you want a "performance filter", i would suggest the AFE (Air Flow Engineering) brand. Ive previously had K&N on most of my other cars, but the AFE filters are much better. Ive had both the white coloured "Dry" filter, and the blue oiled version. Both were good, very good quality and thick filter element: Air Filters Direct Fit Magnum FLOW OER PRO 5R Air Filter; VW Jetta/GTI (MKV) 06-08 L4-2.0L (t) 30-10157 - aFe Power

Mann, Mahle, and Hengst are all OEM suppliers to Volkswagen.

Assuming it is still the stock one, can it be washed, vacuumed or blown out with air? Would using the $15 cheapie that was linked above result in any performance loss or additional wear on the engine?

And after looking at the pictures it seems the ebay cheapie is the Ryco one that SCA had, but just $10 cheaper.
