I've seen these around for a while now, in the UK and Germany, but saw my first iin Oz yesterday. On display at Sydney airport. Not a very nice colour, and pretty expensive ($54k) with all the options. But, it does look to be a very interesting competitor to all of the Japanese mini 4wds.

Anyone planning on a Tiguan?

A guy at my work wanted to replace his Jeep with a CX-7 but was complaining about price and consumption.
When I told him about the Tiguan he ended up driving one that weekend.
I saw one at Hornsby VW yesterday. Looked ok but not great. I would have one over a RAV4 with 200 "killer wasps" anyday. Man I hate those cars.
Still I reckon a wagon would be the way to go for a family etc.
Hopefully we will get the Jetta wagon one day

I saw 3 at the dealer's when I picked my GTI up last Friday.
Surprisingly small - then it is based on the Golf platform (i think). Felt like a bloated Golf when i sat in it.
My business partner was looking to get a diesel one for his missus - but they won't be coming out until the end of the year at the earliest - too long to wait, otherwise he'd be buying one, instead he opted for the Audi A3 Sportback.

... and your mate must have wanted a petrol one for his missus if he heard that story. They have only imported diesels so far, petrols won't come until end of year.

I Like VW but in the compact SUV (Soft Roader) field i think the bench mark is the Honda CRV. My only gripe with it is, my golf will have more torque and the same power output, Honda could have done a better job increasing the output. Mind you would be good for a family of four!sigpic

i would have probably gotten one; but it wasn't coming until now and I got a 4x4 in january this year...
then again a fully spec'd Tiguan would have been a bit more than what we got in the end; and for Tiguan money I'm sorry but I would walk next door to the Land Rover dealership and get a Freelander 2 - THAT sets the benchmark, not the CR-V - that's a soccer mum's car mate!-

Mum is very interested in getting one! she likes my golf so much that when I told her about the Tiguan she was very keen. I am going to take her to some dealers soon to have a look. I like it personally... and I would do anything to get her to not buy a RAV4 or CRV lol.....MY 2008 VW Golf GT-Sport TDi Weitec Hicon GT Coilovers, Alpine System

im not a big fan of the whol soft roader business....
the only one i'd be buying is the Subaru Forrester, we had one a little while back and it was a cracker car
to hell with the TiguanVW: it aint just a car, its a way of life

and what's the price difference? you can get new Lux. CRVs for around 40k on roads (if you haggle well) compare that to base model Si6 thats about 10k less (not including on roads), I think it's a good compromise. Don't really like the styling of the landrover, but that comes down to personal pref.
For the medium SUV you would also have to compare it to a Territory or Captiva which I also judging by what I've seen and driven the Freelander does set the benchmark.
But again.... It's really hard to compare a car that has a bigger engine as well as different price bracket. To me I would rather a more fuel efficient car these days with petrol and diesel hitting 1.60 or 1.85 respectively...
Soccer mums car, prob. But the extra room at the back has more use then just transporting kids....
Gonna add a couple of things to this.... The Tiguan actually is cheaper then what I expected.... For roughly about $2k extra you can get a similar spec... interesting....
43k for Met. Paint, Parking Sensors, Sun Roof, Leather Seats, Alarm and front fog lights with the 125kw TSI
Judging from that the Tiguan puts up a quite a pretty good fight to other soft roaders....Last edited by GTom; 06-06-2008, 08:06 PM.sigpic

I then went into 'real' 4WDs. I looked at a Forester before buying a Jetta but thought it felt a bit 'bloated' and the fuel economy was shocking.
I decided to avoid the whole 'softroader business' and buy a Jetta TDI for road use and keep my 1991 Land Rover Disco 2.5 TDI for the occasional camping trip to places like Fraser Island and for towing stuff.
No compromises that way

I might be considering a Tiguan when they release the "offroad pack" one with the better approach angle. That is also pending on me getting serious offroading out of my system ... I dont think the Tiguan could do what my Jeep does ...

They are now thinking that as a compact family car,the Jetta will suit their needs better.Nothing to see here...
