  • Mk5 golf gti, how many kms too many?

Hello my name is Brandt and I've been a dubber for just over a year now having bought my first VW in May 2014 which is a 1998/99 mk4 golf 1.6 and have been looking at upgrading to a mk5 gti.
I've found a 2006 model with 137xxx kms and was unsure if that is too many kms ?
I'm still only 20 years old and $11,000 is still a lot of money to me. But I've always wanted the upgrade and well the mk5 is a goal I can reach.

    Just want some thoughts.

    Thank you,
    Brandt

137xxx kms should be fine as long as it has been looked after. Check that services have been kept up with and major services done(belts, chains etc..)

I own a 2006 with nearly 201000k's on it and it feels pretty good to me

I have 164,000km on my 1.8tsi and it drives like new because it's been maintained properly. OTOH, my Golf 2.0 before that was a piece of rubbish by 130k as the previous owner hadn't maintained it properly.

140k isn't much provided the timing belt / water pump / pulleys were done at 105k and maintenance has been done by a VW specialist.

If the maintenance looks dodgy and the car doesn't present well then walk away as there are plenty of good choices out there.

Count on spending $1500 - $2500/yr in maintenance & repairs (your probably spending that on the MK4) and you won't go too wrong.

Thanks a lot guys, I'll be headed up to Newcastle sometime this week to check it out.
Now I can go up a little more calm haha, and yeah I'll be happy to be spending a bit of r&m money on it as long as it's not extensive [emoji13]

I'll get back to you about the car though... If anyone is keen to check it out via carsales I'll post the ad here:

DSG service should have been done at 60k & 120k - make sure it has or they give you some money to do it if it's just over.

They look like factory xenons (squirters in bumper?) - that's a huge plus.

Good luck - looks a nice car at a fair price.

It's had a hit in the rear at some point, judging by the photos. Chances are the front was probably damaged at the same time.

Airbox/engine cover isn't broken, which is a good sign that it hasn't been worked on by apes.

Listen for rattles on cold start-up at the gearbox end of the engine. If they hang around any longer than a minute, I'd be prepared to walk away.

This thread gladdens my heart re. the prospective lifespan of my 84xxxkm GTI

Edit: The OP's question got me wondering what sort of life span we can expect from our Mk5 GTIs. So I went searching and found this thread. Suffice to say my jaw dropped:

                VWVortex.com - Highest Mileage MkV's: An up-to-date list

Lots of Mk5 GTIs in there with between 100,000 and 200,000 miles (ie. 160,000 - 320,000kms) with minimal issues - just routine maintenance! Great to know our cars are so durable and reliable in general.

                  Some good ones there
Stick to the service intervals and you will go a long way!

Just had a service today - next one (120K) is the big one! DSG and timing belts and more.

Thanks heaps for all the help guys ! Planning to go to Newcastle at some stage in the near future.
Will be sure to check it all out and listen to the gearbox for any special noises
I asked about the rear bumper on the phone and the front end and the bloke said it hadn't been in any crashes they just decided to put it on? Seemed a bit strange but I'll find out more when I can get up there.

Is it just me or does the whole passenger side as well as the rear look like it's been resprayed vs the rest of the car?

Hopefully it's all good. Amazing what $11k can get you.

The caryard advertising wouldnt have a clue whether the car has been crashed/resprayed. And they will tell you what you want to hear to get you to visit the caryard. Where is the car located as i cant get this info on my phone? Perhaps i could help you check it over?

Further to my comments above on "how many kms is too many", this is the best I've seen to date. 2006 Jetta in the US with the same engine as the Mk5GTIs here:

The owner reports the engine is still strong with good compression in all cylinders and has it never had the head off.

                            Right rear corner looks worse.

I hope it's just bad lighting.

Painting or changing the rear bumper is common enough.
