  • Caff's MKV GTI

Soo i bought this last week!

    2006 Golf GTI DSG.
Metalic black in color with grey leather interior. Some mods already done to it including(from what i know) a Forge Twintake induction system and some wheels of some sort(anybody?). White LED interior lighting and a red downlight from the sunroof switches(standard or not?). I also found a receipt for a GIAC tune in the log books after purchasing it.

It has some nice little finder lips on it which i assume are not standard.
I would love someone to chyme in and tell me if there is anything else that is not standard 2006 fare?

The headlight lenses are really foggy. I'm not wasting my time trying to polish them right now as that has never worked for me in the past so i ordered the cheapest aftermarket headlights i could find locally to replace them. I do like the look of the standard lights so but i could not find replacement lenses for the life of me so i'll have to revisit them in the not too distant future.

For now i am just enjoying the extra grunt over the 4Mo. I did not get to test drive any other GTI's or Jetta's prior to buying this so just assumed all GTI's pulled that hard when they came on boost until i found the GIAC receipt. Though i assume a 6 speed manual would have been a bit more fun, i am liking the DSG more than i thought i would. The Forge induction is what sold me on it though. Sounds like Darth Vader with asthma! lol

Trying to look after my license will be difficult though as once on boost, it pulls like a 15 year old school boy.

I have also ordered and payed for my new number plates. I'll upload a photo of those once fitted. Till then, i'll add the headlights when they arrive and decide if i like them or not and go from there.
Next round of mods will include a boost guage of some sort(any suggestions?) so i have some idea what the GIAC tune included(new to VW tuning). I'll also add a downpipe and delet the standard Cat converter. I'm about 90% sure the exhaust is standard at this point but i have not been far enough under it to see the front section.

The only problems i have so far are that there is not 90km speed marker on the speedo(just goes from 80-100) and there is a knock in the front left whenever i turn right with the suspension loaded(parking/roundabouts). From my research, it sounds like a subframe issue that can be fixed really easy. At least thats what im hoping it is anyway lol.

Anyway, really loving the MK5 platform and though i miss the VR6 growl, i passed that Bora 4Mo onto my partner so i can still drive it anytime i want

Welcome to mk5's mate, the wheels are Karthoums, and a factory option, this is also why you have the plastic splash guard things(Australian regulations or something). Personally I would get rid of the splash guard things, I think they look kinda ****y. But the colour and wheel combo looks brilliant.

I also forgot how high these sit standard, needs more lows
    Mine: -MK5 Golf 2.0TDI[Deiselgeek sigma 6 shifter + H&R 50mm lowering springs + GTI Tartan interior + Audi 18x8 A6 wheels(Dark Steel)]
    -MK1 Golf The re-spray/re-build
In the family: -MK5 Jetta 2.0TDI, -9N3 Polo TDI, -6R Polo TDI, -Mitsubishi S^$&box van
A pattern seems to be forming...

Nice! I have 18" Khartoums on my Mk5 Comfortline too. Got them powdercoated with a clear coat in Gun Metal. It camouflages the brake dust.

          Thanks for the info guys

Yes, i found the car on Carsales. It was purchased through a VW dealer in Canberra.

Yes, it needs some lows but ill probably go with shock and springs instead of coilovers this time for insurance reasons. Ill call and ask them what they say about coilovers first though.

The wheels will be temporarily replaced with some cheap rims while i do a reco on the surface and paint them either the same color as the body or gun metal grey.

I had the resonator cut out today. It made about as much difference to tge note as i was expecting and had hoped so im happy with that for now.
I had the 4 subframe bolts and Audi washers inserted today also but it has not fixed my knock/clunk in the front left when loaded so unfortunately i have to continue chasing that.... any idea's?

Picked up my new plates yesterday and gave my vag a wash

Currently putting together a shopping cart in various places consisting of the following...
Downpipe: Either OBX catted(ebay special) 3" at around $350 posted OR a 42DD 3" if i can fit it in the budget.
Dogbone: Either a VF Engineering Billet unit OR a BSH OR an 034 depending on where i order from.
Springs: Most likelt H&R Sports Spring Set.
            and a Cabin Filter

I will most likely grab some other bit n pieces while im at it if it does not impact shipping costs too much.

Also considering an intercooler of some sort. Just researching for now as there are a lot of options. I'll price an S3 unit from the local VW dealer and cost it against either an ebay cheapy, a Forge Twincooler(to keep the Forge theme going) and a CTS unit.

If anyone has personal experience with any of the above mentioned items, i'd love to hear about them.

love the karthoums, one of the nicer wheels vw makes imo. the knocking/clunking might be a CV joint on its way out. perhaps find a specialist or your preferred mechanic and have them take a look at it. the speedo on my jetta goes in increments of 10km/h until 100km/h, then increments of 20km/h above. there is still a marking for every 5km/h, just no numbers. not sure if your speedo is the same though.

              congrats on the new car!

Hey saw your car parked in town today!
                Thought those plates were familiar
I own the black mk2 parked directly opposite to you.

I'm in the process of seeking out a mk5 also, so I'm getting plenty of tips reading your posts also.
                Cheers

                  Hey m8!

I noticed your MK2 a few times and wondered who it belonged to. Its a really good example and appears to be in good nick. You parked next me a few times when i was driving the Bora 4Mo to work lol. If you know anyone looking for a MK3 VR6, let me know

If you see me in the car park, don't hesitate to come say hi. I'll take you for a drive if your keen.
Also, if you know who keeps writing "ussay" on my P plates with a blackboard marker, i'd love to know who it is. I'm assuming it is my boss because he is childish like that but he keeps denying it

cheers Lol, might hit you up for that ride mate!
I've got my eyes on a white mkv up the coast that has a APR tune, but not sure I want to go through transferring a modded gti from QLD to NSW rego. Been searching for the right one for a couple of months.
Yeah the mk2 has been my ride for some time now, but feel the need for something a bit newer

Noticed the APR sticker on the back window. Any mods to mention?

mate honestly do not go to vw for a price on an oem s3 intercooler unless you have a spare testicle you don't want...

i have heard good things about the ths unit so may be do a search on that as price / quality comparison...

Haha, yeah I must arrive just after you mate. I always park that side as there is less likely chance of getting your door scratched. Had it happen a few times in the public car park.
Car has an APR Stage 2 tune with the Carbonio air intake, apr high pressure fuel pump and apr down pipe.

Must say I'm pretty impressed. Haven't had a good drive in it yet but it seems to ride the local roads quite nicely, I was worried it might be a bit bumpy but not so bad-hoping this weekend to head up the coast for a run.

                            Cheers

I stopped procrastinating and finally ordered new headlights, column mounted indigo boost guage, BSH dog bone and insert and some red on black .:R badges(one grill one normal). Ordered from Parts4Euro this time to see how their products and service go compared to ECS. Items currently in transit from Jamaica NY.

I also purchased some black on red front and rear VW badges but i'm almost positive the front one wont fit without modification. Thats what i get for buying off ebay i guess.

Still umming and arring over downpipe choice. I really like the 42DD site right now as i can get the catted downpipe and a set of H&R Sports springs delivered for around $1k in total. So far i have been quoted $680 for the H&R springs locally so i'll almost deffinately be getting them abroad. I am trying my best to stay away from ebay as far as downpipes go but the OBX catted DP looks half decent and the price is really good. The only thing stopping me from buying it right now is the fact that the cat is situated directly after the DP.

If i don't get the springs, i'll at least get front and rear sway bars as i'm not totally sure i want to lower the car due to the standard(or complete lack) of country NSW roads up here. Pretty sure there is not meant to be grass growing through the cracks in the road?
