Edit: I changed the car year from 2008 to 2007 and the quote jumped to over $1000 with all my other details the same. I'm pretty sure there's been no real changes from 2007 to 2008 on the GT Sport TSI. Strange...
Those 'Sport' badges must be a helluva lot cheaper than the straight 'GT' badges...

In May, I obtained comprehensive insurance with NRMA for $593. Two drivers over 40, Castle Hill garage, max NCB.
Wide range in quotes (some were about $900).

That's not what I found, for me it was $100 cheaper to insure the GT Sports TSI than my GT TSI. Not only that, but I spoke to my insurer (RACV) about the 2yr new car replacement if it gets written off.
Given the original Golf GTs are no longer made and the new ones are GT Sports, they refuse to acknowledge that they are the same car under a different name (and slightly different paint/detail), the 2yr new car replacement scheme is now completely useless. Instead, they'd just pay you out under the agreed value or market value.

I work in insurance warhead and can tell you the difference in price is due to vehicle stats. As silly as it may seem because there are thousands of vehicle models and pricing is computer calculated every different model gets 'stats' and built into those stats is what the company has been paying out on that model.
If they are paying out less on a particular variation then the system thinks it's a lower risk hence the lower premium even for very much the same car.
I managed to drop $400 from my GTi premium moving from Shannons to PayAsYouDrive http://payasyoudrive.com.au/. I only drive around 10K a year though so if you're an infrequent driver, try getting a quote from them.
I'm amazed what prices you guys are getting for GTi s.
I've just purchased a new Jetta TDi I'm 41, 5 year no claim bonus car is standard except for iPod and metallic paint and best quote was $960 pa CGU and new for old for 3 years if less than 50 000 km on clock or 2 years less than 30 000km. Further the car will be in a locked garage overnight. Have I been put over the barrel by the insurance companies ?

Im suprised how cheap my insurance is
golf pacific 09 tdi dsg
ok its not a gt, but still.
Im paying $563 with the windshield cover from nrma living in castle hill.
im surpised cause i lost my license back in 07 and most insurers wont touch me (or theyll ream me if they do offer me a quote)
I am on $1300 a year with shannons... but I have the possibility of doing any mods and listing any kinda mods. Which I have.. down to all my custom fiddling and adjustments.
Another valid point is the actual QUALITY of the insurance you have for the $$$ do they have a great reputation for paying out, letting you choose your repairer etc.
I know that if I get in a bingle I am confident of getting a good repair without getting issues. If i was with brand xyz-noname for $300 i would be worried.

My 1997 Vr6 insured for 11k would cost my father 900 a year, and he's 52, its all about the postcode and have a go at 2165 for laugh to see what you'd get for a more valulable car...
