Having now had a few days of running the two systems....the RNS has by far the better screen. Much nicer image, and you have the option of top down or birds eye views. Navigation also seems appreciably more refined. The RNS seems to resolve down to which lane we're in whereas the Eclipse seems to get it wrong a little more often. Recalculation is also much faster on the RNS.
Voice control....well the Eclipse has a nice lady who gently tells you what to do. The RNS has Gertrude, and she's a bossy bitch.
Ergonomics is a bit of a mixed result. The small buttons on the Eclipse are fiddly, but do seem more intuitive than the RNS. I find myself having to hunt through the menus a bit with the RNS. Integration is a win by a mile to the RNS, especially with the MFD and steering wheel controls. It looks good in the car...as you'd expect. The Eclipse works in a standard Japanese dash, but would look out of place in the VW.
The inclusion of nav on the MFD is a major winner for the VW.
VW gives GPS altitude whereas the AVN doesn't, but on the other hand the Eclipse will display speed, which the RNS won't.
VW plays mega MP3 (i.e. DVDs containing MP3), whilst the AVN is CD MP3 only. Of course the RNS also has a hard drive and SD slot.
AVN has a cheap camera option and excellent iPod integration with full menus.
Overall, you can see the difference a couple of years makes. The technology has leapt ahead since the Eclipse became available.
