Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 2.0 FSI 120K Service Questions

    Hi All

I am about to do a 120,000 service on my GTI and just want to check that I have everything covered.

    I plan to replace:

    - Engine Oil
    - Oil Filter
    - Air Cleaner Element
    - Pollen Filter
    - Fuel Filter
    - Spark Plugs

    Additionally, as part of this service I will be replacing;

    - Coil Set
    - Manual Transmission Fluid

I previously had replaced at 105K: timing belt, water pump, PCV valve and fuel pump cam follower.

    My questions are:

    - Are there any other items that I need to replace/tune/adjust at 120k service? The service schedule in the manual isn't real clear.
    - Do the OEM spark plugs need the gap adjusted or are they ok out of the box? What is the gap spec? P/N is 06H905621.
    - Any other tips that I need to consider/be wary of during this service?

    Thanks.

Air filter isn't due at 120,000kms, done every 45K.

Entirely up to you though, as you'll have to take the whole airbox off to get the plugs out anyway.

Can anyone help with the spark plug gap spec? I'm assuming that the OEM plugs will be pre-gapped for the engine out of the box?

Also, my 4 airbox grommets are falling apart. I will replace them. Are there any tips to help make the airbox removal at next service easier? Do you apply grease or something similar to the studs before re-installing the airbox? Seems to be such a bad design...

I usually give them a generous coat of silicone spray.

Plug gap is apparently 0.8mm, although being iridium, they'll probably be right to go straight out of the box.

I use rubber grease on the engine cover grommets. Works really well.

The spark plugs come pre-gapped. I wouldnt attempt re-gapping and be careful checking them because you might damage the irridium tip.
