Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Pick up this Saturday - my 1st new car ever!

Yep, I reckon $2000 is the normal difference. Up until the 45500 my best was 47358. Wouldn't mind betting its all in how much of the DD they will sacrifice. It's normally $2495 for my model.

Plus I've told them all I'm ordering this month (tax reasons, blah blah - all bs of course). That means if one of them really needs one more sale for volumes, mine is waiting

the dealer told me today about the corporate fleet program which i didnt know about until i got there

i managed to haggle him to $26838 for a new polo GTI

        RRP is 26990

and normal driveaway price is 31k

when you say 10% off RRP does that mean i got ripped off?

as 10% off 26990 is 2699 which would make it 24291 leaving 2547 for the other charges.

        does that make any sense?
        any help appreciated!

No, you didn't get ripped off. You bought a brilliant car for a good price, and you will be ecstatic with it when you get it.

You are just suffering the post-signing, pre-delivery blues, having too much time to think about it

PS. It's normal to wonder if a better price could have been haggled. You have to remember that when you are in the dealership, the dealership is in the powerful negotiating position, not you. It's because you are on their turf and they can read your body language, and it's why they will not do a deal on the phone where they can't close.

The most recent car we bought my wife did all the haggling, and she did it all via email. A mucher more pleasant way to do things.

dealers often negotiate on the RRP for the car, but then supply the options at full RRP.

Make sure you haggle on any of the options you consider as well

                  Take your credit card

I sent out emails with a somewhat ridiculous price, just to see who'd respond. One dealer in a city 200km north of Sydney responded with LOL so they didn't get a sale. Ironically, as it turned out I didn't know I was eligible for the fleet discount so I got the car for $1000 less than my laughable request. Sucked in Ms LOL. One day I'll show your sales manager that email.

The clincher - drive a hard bargain that you're prepared to pay and show the salesman your credit card. Tell him/her that they can get the deposit right now for THAT price. If you're really serious about buying it at THAT price, hand 'em the card - Deal or No Deal!! A couple of dealers told me (after the sale) that the credit card is a great bargaining tool ('meat tenderiser', one called it).

I showed it (but didn't hand it over), saved $5345 off list, + free mats (woot) - that was my first and only quote from the dealer I wanted to buy it from. The next dealer I went to told me to go back to the original quote and buy it - don't even bother shopping it around. I did.

Deal with a decision maker, not the noob / muppet / trainee. I did and he knew he gave me a good price. He knew I'd be back.

You won't get the best quote / deal unless you're serious about buying it - they can tell. Do your homework and be prepared to buy it then and there. You might save another $150 or so if you shop around for another day or 2 but is that really value for money?

They all have access to the same pool of cars so if one can get it, they all can get it.

I used an online broker who got me a fleet discount, I didn't have to do a thing, just waited for there phone call with the best price. Saved me about 4500 off retail (probably more but can't remember) .

I tried negotiating with the dealer directly but couldn't get a good price so I got my car through Automotive Fleet Management (APESMA's car buying service) instead and got $6,241 off the drive-away price!

I also got a quote off betterdeal.com.au but they could not beat the quote I got from the dealer.

Did that come with a car ? This year's model? In baby-poo orange?

When something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Is the extra week or 2 of agony really worth the couple of hundred $$ you MIGHT have saved?

Time is money ... unless you're unemployed, single, have no hobbies and in a coma.
