  • Fleet Discount

I see people mention fleet discount for Professional bodies etc.

    How does it work?

Does the person turn up and show some membership documentation and then they sell the car at that price?

Can the person with the membership sign the contract and take delivery of the vehicle and then as with a secondhand car change the ownership at the RTA without paying stamp duty as they can say they picked the vehicle up etc for another party?

just to elaborate on the last point, i have purchased several secondhand vehicles and the receipt is in my name, i then have gone to the rta with my wife to transfer the rego and just said i picked the vehicle up for her and they say thats fine. I just put it in writing and sign it.

    Thanks.

Not sure on the rego transfer, but I just put a deposit this week on a GTI using fleet discount. I saw the offer on my employer intranet where we have a number of deals from different companies. The VW deal was 10% of RRP on any model and only $995 dealer delivery fee (vs $2,995 normally for a GTI). There was a link to a letter template which had to be printed on my company letterhead, addressed to the dealer and then signed by my Manager to confirm I was a full time employee of the organisation. This letter then has to be provided to the dealer sometime before the vehicle is picked up to confirm the discount.

^^ I had to do the same.

bear in mind the 10% discount is only on the bare vehicle, not on any further options you add (leather/satnav etc)..

The car is still in your name, they just need to verify that you work for a company that is registered as a fleet customer hence the paperwork.

whilst i didn't get the fleet discount for my GTI, i got a 4x4 earlier this year and I had to do the same; i.e. provide a letter signed by my GM...

saved about 6k off the driveway price which was pretty damn good - a bit over 10%.

i heard last week that one of my friends qualifies for a $1000 discount or so for being a member of the assoc. of engineers of Australia. To me these are all a bunch of crap except for the fleet discount which must have some play in the taxation of the car... because it was absolutely imperative that I presented this letter when picking up the car, even though I had already negotiated, paid deposit etc... so they must do something with it to get the $ from somewhere else!

That's the part I'm curious about! How does it work?

i think they get the fleet discount money from VW Australia. The dealership itself does not lose money on the sale... just comes from VWA instead to promote their cars in companies....
I have done the same with all my leased cars.. my company sends a letter to the dealership telling them that i am employed by them and therefore entitled to the fleet discount.
The amount usually varies by manufacturer and car, and can also vary depending upon the time of year. Some businesses as mentioned above can get a flat rate discount also.

I purchased a company car once and was offered the fleet discount (less $4500), but to qualify, i had to register it in the company name - conditions must vary from one car make to another.

at the time, i didnt want it registered to the company, so I couldnt get the fleet discount. so i negotiated with the dealer, and got a "man-in-the-street" discount of $4300 instead.

seems like the fleet discount offer may not always be what its stacked up to be, so make sure you negotiate well

Where I work, for a fleet discount everything is handled by the fleet company. If I wanted to buy a car with fleet discount I would test drive at the dealer, then just ring the fleet number at work, all the paperwork is handled by them. All you do is rock up on the day to collect your car.

Thats correct... i have the option of getting my own pricing or just going through the leasing company and get their best quote.
i normally do both so that i can be sure the lease company is doing their best for me and not just giving me a crap deal.

To give an example i have seen on the variation in fleet discounts..
A couple of years ago when ford were doing crap sales with the falcon they were offering up to $6000 fleet discount compared to Holden only offering up to $2000 coz they couldn't keep up with demand on the commodore so they weren't pushing sales.

Supply and demand at work..........why would you discount if you can sell them as quick as you can build them.

From a soon-to-be VW owner , attached is a copy of the Corporate Plus Program template letter which has to be completed to obtain the quasi fleet discount (~10%).

You can get a similar discount without the paperwork. Just haggle.

When its corporate, they claim the difference back through VW Australia, hence the paperwork.

Holden has a good program for workers who have 25 years+ service...
                        eg:

but the residuals are absolutely shocking!

Fleet discount - definitely worth pursuing

Apparently (so the dealer told me) they get half the 10% difference from the RRP from VW & cop the hit on delivery etc. They also make money from the "back end" (look it up - there are various kickback they get from VW - same goes for all new car dealers).

In any case, the signed letterhead saved me over $5k on a Pacific TDI DSG with a sunroof. It basically made $2k difference, they told me (after the sale).

Just going through all this at the moment.

Corporate + price for my spec is $44,454

Rang the dealer & said I couldn't get the paperwork, and got a price of $45,500.

Still working hard to get that down to $45,000

It's worth a day of dealing with salesmen/women to get another $500, since that's half a week's wages.

Still waiting on a Broker to get back to me ---- waste of time, that approach.

                              Save $5.3k with fleet discount

List on the road was about $41.3k - I paid $36k OTR with fleet discount for an 03/08 build Pacific TDI DSG + Sunroof + metallic Silver (even got free mats).

Dealer said I would have paid $38k without the fleet discount. He also said nobody would beat his price (1st quote). He was right.
