  • Replacement Key / Remote - Melbourne Locksmith & Coder Required

    Hey guys,

Picked up an 07 GTI recently. Only came with one key unfortunately.

I bought a blank key to suit off eBay, and am now looking for someone/somewhere that will be able to program the remote and cut the key blade.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

( Yes - I did google a bunch of auto locksmiths in Melbourne - but just wondering if the forum has anyone on here that they have used before - and what sort of coin they paid to get it done. )

    Cheers.

    Hi Tom,

I will send you a PM with the number of a guy who will be able to help you out.

Also from the locksmith side of things. Generally I do not cut and code keys that customers buy off Ebay. The reason for this is because a lot of the keys on there are made from crap material, the wrong transponder chip, no chip at all, or a used key which doesn't work. As for remotes they can be very poor quality and again not work.

From a business point of view it's not worth using these keys because when they don't work the customer doesn't want to pay, but we still need to be paid for our time. And for the customer if the key doesn't work good luck getting the Ebay seller to sort it out, most of them are just reselling the keys and have no idea about the technical side of things.

I recently bought a key off ebay, and as AALocksmiths said, wrong transponder chip. Anyone got any advice where to get the correct key from?

Yes. I have the correct keys and chips. It all comes down to finding someone who had the correct gear to code them

OK - So here's what happened with mine.
Bought an eBay key for $79.
Found a locksmith in Melbourne via Gumtree website that said he could cut & code for $100 cash.
He was able to cut the key, get the remote locking working BUT couldn't get it coded to the immobiliser! He didn't charge me anything and told me I need to go to a VW dealership to do it.
I called around the dealers - most charge a standard price of $110 to program it to the immobiliser - however BURWIN VW in Furntree Gully only charge $88, and luckily not far from home.
Got it done today, all working fine.

I'm guessing you didn't call the guy whose details I sent you, it would of been a lot less mucking around.

Well, you guessed wrong. I did contact him and he wanted $200-250 to do the job (Not a bad price actually).
But, spoke to the guy from Gumtree as mentioned, he was 100% confident he could do it all for $100, but when he couldn't do the immob, he didn't charge me for anything.
So, in my view, the 'mucking around' wasn't really that bad considering I got it done for $88 in 30 minutes at VW.

Has anyone heard of using any of the previous methods that were used with the Mk4s? Or cheaper local locksmiths (Melbourne based - Northern suburbs preferable) I got quoted $313 to get my remote replaced, it still works but is apparently on its way out!

No I haven't even tried it tbh, it's just the boot lid button doesn't work. I had a look on ebay and I can get that bit for $50 or so, which seems quite reasonable, and I'm happy to program myself using the methods posted in various forums. However I don't have a spare so I thought it would be a good time to get one, without having to give up an arm and a leg! With previous cars I've always managed to pull local locksmiths down from the $250 advertised to $170-180, but few seem game to play with VWs.

When I owned the golf I bought a key off Ebay I programed the central locking ok but could not get the immobilizer recoded ,the Vw dealer thought it was the original key and reordered only the key end ended up costing me $250 plus $50 for the key off Ebay ,
