Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Jetta 16" Conti SC2 Tyre Pressure?

What do you guys recommend for the tyre pressure on the stock Conti 16" SportContact 2 in a Jetta TDI?

I'm noticing the fronts starting to scrub a bit on the edges, which is probably a combo of the front wheel drive, the very torquey TDI, and all of the damn roundabouts in Canberra Getting the pressure right would help I'm sure.

Two good places to start are:

    * Tyre placard - should be on the driver's side door jam IIRC.
    * Tyres themselves - most tyres I've ever used list an ideal inflation pressure.

From there, it's really a case of personal preference. I tend to run my tyres 2-3psi higher than recommended, it stiffens the tyre up a bit, gives better performance and economy (the latter potentially marginal).
    Nothing to see here...

They tyre pressures on the placard are useless and are there for maximum comfort. I normally run about 8psi above the recommended pressures but each car is slightly different and some will require different front and back. I currently run 37-38 in my current car which is a little over 8psi.

For economy it can make a big difference, between 5 and 20% over the stock tyre pressures depending on how far you want to take them.

I'm not sure what pressures to run in the GTI with stock 18's so if anyone has any suggestions for me that would be appreciated.

I checked the sticker, and had to convert from kpa to psi, because that's what I'm used to. The sticker recommends 33psi for normal load, or 36/43psi for high load.

I my last car (Magna), with 15" Bridgestone GR50's I used to inflate them to 36psi, and got a lot of km's out of them. I might start with this, and see how it feels.

I've been wondering how the tyre pressure sensor thing works, and I just read in the manual that the ABS system measures the rotational rate of the wheel, and can detect low tyre inflation this way. Cool.

I have 36psi on my 17s. Gives it a good ride. Any lower is too soft and any higher is too hard.

Try 38~40PSI all around - You'll use less fuel, the car will feel more planted, less bodyroll, safer braking and you won't see that uneven (bad) tyre wear!

Might be a little harsher ride, but barely.

Funnily enough my tyre preassure warning light came on for the first time yestorday in the Jetta,so pumped them all up from 34 to 36 last night.
Was impressed, the front left had lost preassure, and I had not noticed.

1000 as your quote or do you mean 10000
Cant believe 1000 and you have wear.

Have 7000 (jetta TDI) and no sign of any wear although mine is Hwy driving.

                      one thousand kms

Sorry if I wasn't clear - the tyres aren't worn down, but I'm just noticing the wear pattern on the front shoulders is noticably different to the rears. It might just be the normal "run in" of the tyres, but I'm keeping a close eye on things.

Haven't taken it on a highway trip yet.

How much pressure had it lost to cause the light to come on.?

And what happens if you run different front and back pressures?

I assume that is the purpose of the calibration so that it knows what they are like when correctly inflated.

                            It was under 20.
Had a puncture,as today it was looking a little bit flat,so went to Bob Janes, and they pulled a nail out of it.
Reset all the preassures at 34,said that is ideal for the Jettas,at the 36 they are a bit hard...
And charged 25 dollars for the repair, which I think is reasonable.

I'm running my R32 at 38 psi. I'm very impressed with the ride...I guess the suspension is doing the work, and not the tyre sidewalls.
