Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Can Bus Gateway failure?

So, I insisted on installing a new head unit in my 2006 Golf TDI myself. Figured with no MFD/steering controls and a bunch of bought wiring harnesses it would be a cake walk. Installed it and it was working, though it wouldn't switch off. After a couple of days and a fair bit of research I decided to try a bunch of different options, 12v cigarette lighter, taping into the 6th row on the internal fusebox, switching the constant/switched 12v wires at the harness (none of which worked, the unit would never switch off).

    Out of frustration I started getting careless and at some point crossed what I think was one of the 12v cables coming from the car's harness (can bus?) and either the new head unit or a earth somewhere . All of a sudden the newer head unit, nor the OEM unit were getting any power. I checked all fuses, both under the bonnet and drivers side door - all seemed fine so I borrowed a friends Vgate scan and came up with the following errors;

    Can Bus Gateway

Error 01305 - databus for infotainment
    Sporadic 004 no signal/communication

    Error 01304 - radio
    Sporadic 004 no signal/communication

Give it to me straight vwwatercooled, am I going to have to scrap my baby and buy a Toyota Corolla like mum always suggests or is there still hope for me?

    Halp!

Did you check the fuse in the head unit itself?

I did indeed, both were fine.

        I don't think it'll be a CANbus gateway failure.

Unit will still boot up without it.

With your initial problem, did you try taking the keys out of the ignition to get it to shut off? Even with the key at 'off', the radio will run for another 20mins.

Strange, any idea what it could be? It was the new unit that was plugged in when there was the short, but even with the old unit hooked up there is still no power.

I did take the key out of the ignition, the only time it was left for more than 20 minutes though was with the original harness wiring, in which case it never powered off. After taping into the fusebox and the cigarette lighter for the power sources I probably only left it for about 10 minutes though. Shortly after that I had the short, so I couldn't test it any further.

False alarm everybody, it seems after checking a few fuse diagrams online I was checking the wrong fuses all along. I am such a idiot. Thanks to that attempted to help.

Hi, in terms of the original concern. The gateway vehicle's prior to MY07 had installed do cause current draw when newer units are installed.
In terms of the codes logged. They are indicative of your ignition was turned on when the radio was disconnected or the other unit you have is not a genuine radio unit.
These cars use the can signal to wake up the units.
Also what wires have you tapped into???

Worth noting, that if it doesn't have steering wheel controls, you may as well leave the CANbus wires disconnected off the back of the radio unit. No more current draw issues.

I had two wiring harnesses, one from the canbus, then another from the headunit so the only thing I tapped into was Fuse 31 which is where I drew my power from - idiots guide to audio installation.

Will I still experience battery drain even though the power is drawn from the fuse which switches off when the key is removed?

If its an aftermarket unit and you have no steering controls why the need for the can bus harness?? Just trying to picture how it has been wired into the vehicle.

If you are using a wakeup wire from a switchable power via ignition then you should be ok.

It's just a generic harness, not a canbus. I'm not all that confident at stripping wires etc so I didn't really want to go for the ignition, I tend to screw these things up more times than not and I could see it being a extremely costly mistake.

Go to Connects2 and get the correct harness or search eBay and someone will be selling one with the right connectors on. I got one from Connects2 that converts from VW quadlock to ISO for my Pioneer HU. Then it was just plug-n-play.

Thanks man. Do you still have the original key in for accessories etc features?

All the harness does is allow you to convert from the Quadlock to the plug type for your HU. It will get it's accessory power as if it's a factory-fit unit and turn on and off with the ignition key etc.

If you have steering wheel controls then Connects2 have a converter module that you can add in that will make the HU correctly interpret the steering wheel controls and react accordingly.

Of course if your car is pre-MY08 then the battery drain issue will still probably affect you. My MY08 car doesn't have this issue so I have no direct experience of this or swapping out the CANBUS gateway for a MY08 module. However, there's a bunch of help out there with part numbers and how-to guides.
