  • Great Ocean Road run

Over past couple of days the boss and I took the R32 for a run along the GOR out to Warnambool. What a great car. It was the first time I've really been able to have a good play with the various gearbox modes...I'm just so glad I didn't buy the manual, the DSG was brilliant.

Handling and braking, on surfaces that weren't always all that good was impressive. Ride quality continues to surprise. I don't know how a car with so little suspension travel, and on low profile tyres can ride as well as it does.

Fuel consumption worked out at 9.1 lts/100km. It got as low as 8.2, before I gave in to temptation.

On the other hand, some of the other drivers that we came across left a fair bit to be desired. The two who took the cake were the bloke in the Diahatsu who was drifting along at about 70% of the speed limit, wouldn't pull off into any of the 'slow vehicle' spots, and had a huge queue behind him; and the twit in a Prado who was driving quickly, but using the entire road to do so. In fact he was actively blocking, and came very close to collecting a bike rider who tried to get past, and also a vehicle coming the other way.

Last time I had this problem on the motorway, I forced myself into a position directly behind the criminal (creating a bit of anger in the person I cut off), then held down the horn until he pulled over. Took about 30 - 60 seconds before he got the messege, but as I sped past him and then pulled over, I'm sure the guy I cut off forgave me (as well as the rest of the queue).

This happens frequently at a corner on my way to work, sharply uphil where I like to overtake slow people. Unfortunately they're often the same people who can't colour between the lines. What I do is pull up almost next to them before the corner, in 2nd so I can slow quickly, keep an eye on them, and if they deviate just the slightest bit, hold down the horn until they go away! The next bit's straight so it's easy overtaking.

These people must've failed Kindergarten; At least that's where I learnt to colour between the lines.

Some people just dont have a clue.!!!!
Cant stay in their own lane when cornering, and have no idea about keeping left.
Instead you just get ****h@#$s sitting in the right lane potting along.

GOR is great fun, but i can only ever go one way and always go back the inland route. Lorne - Barwon Downs is great fun. last time i went down there were too many damn tourists too busy looking at the view and not where they are going.

            Love the GOR.

Sadly I've only ever done it in a Commodore and a Tarago. The Tarago had 8 people onboard too, a couple of them were sick after a while

But yeah, common courtesy is rare these days.

I think that have accept the fact that the GOR, these days, is a tourist road. The traffic will be slow and there will be lots of it. If you expect to go there thinking you can use it as some sort of racetrack, you're kidding yourself. Maybe in the middle of the night, but certainly not during the day, and specially not at weekends.

Not at all. But, the vast majority of drivers had no problems whatsoever with easing into the passing spots as they came up, and very few had a queue of cars behind them. The ones that did, generally seemed to be holding others up intentionally.

This is why the Snowy Mountains, or Victorian Alps make good summer time driving. Much better nag for your buck.
