  • colour coded Gti side skirts and rear bumper on GT Sport

Well the fastening bits and pieces for the side skirts finally came in, so I've had them fitted with a Gti rear bumper and colour coded. I had it done at the VW Dealership at 'cost' price ($1100 for parts, fitting and painting) and although it looks great, they didn't sand back the parts before spraying them, so when you look closely you can see the textured finish.

They have told me that it is not possible to sand the parts back to a smooth finish, but I'm quite certain I've read about several people on this forum having had it done. I told them as much, and now I'm waiting for a response. I'm not too bothered if it remains the way it is, and I'm grateful that they were even interested in helping me out in the first place, but I also figure that if your going to do a job, you might as well do it properly.

Anyway here's the result.... Apologies for the very low quality phone pics - I'll get some better pics when I find the charger for my damn camera.

Well the downside of having this done is that the rims now look horribly small and understated (to me anyway), so when finances allow I'll be whacking something a bit more showy on it.

but I agree the wheels now look too conservative for the car. If you're interested I'll be selling my GTI wheels with the brand new tyres straight off the car as soon it arrives

I think your car looks good, and the wheels don't look out of place at all.

In years past I had a textured bumper painted to a smooth finish. They didn't sand back the bumper, but rather gave it a coating of filler, and sanded that to a smooth finish.

            Looks great.

But, yes, whether by sanding, or using filler, a smooth, gloss result can be achieved to match the upper bumper and bodywork. As has been done on our GTI.

Cheers for the offer, but I'm after at least 18's. I'd like to go 19's, but the cost of boots and ride quality compromise is putting me off.

Ah, so that's how they do it. Thanks for the info guys, at least now I'll be armed with the right information when I speak to them again. Still, I expect if I ask them to fill it and sand it back that they will charge me a lot more. Did you guys pay much extra to get the smooth finish?

Looking good, colour is working well.

The wheels look fine, of course, if you dropped the car and had a bigger rim there'd be a noticeable difference

It is dropped, albeit only 16mm front and 10mm rear. 16mm is about what you'd expect from Eibach prokit coils (GT Sport is 15mm lower than standard Golf already), and apparently, the Koni FSD's are the reason that the rear doesn't lower to the same extent, as they have been known to actually raise the rear of cars running stock springs. Bloody good shocks though.

Nice - how much was it for the GTI skirts alone?
Are these a clip-on item (with a few retaining screws) like a front lip is?
(i.e I'd hope it was a DIY job if no painting was involved)

Are they the same texture as the lower portion of the GT's rear bumper to start with? I'm considering some unpainted... depends on the price

Side-skirts were about $400 for the pair, and yes, they are a clip-on item. I'm not sure exactly how they are fastened on there (haven't looked that closely yet), but just hope that the fasteners turn up with the actual side skirts - I had to wait two months for these supposedly "special screws and clips" to arrive! And yes, they are the same texture as the rear bumper.

You really did get a great price on those skirts.
I called VW parts, and was quoted $900+ over the phone for an unpainted 'kit'.

Needless to say, I can now happily live without em
...until someone in Perth with a GTI upgrades their bodykit and offers me some!

Well evidently I didn't get such a great price afterall! $300, now that's a good price. Anyway, due to the little oversight with the colour-coding, it looks as though I'll be compensated, and will end up paying less than the quoted price.

Hey Rob, are you getting the Gti rear bumper as well, and if so, are you having the car colour-coded? Colour-coded Gti rear bumpers look fantastic I reckon, and from memory it was only around the $300 (excluding painting) mark too.
