A big thankyou to everyone on here who answered all my questions over the past few weeks. I walked into the dealer armed with a lot of knowledge thanks in no small part to you all!
A special mention to ralphk, who highly recommended an out of town dealer an hour away, and I can't thank him enough. Best buying experience I've EVER had. Nothing was too much trouble! The best bit was I was honest and upfront with everything, what trade I needed, and that the actual new car price wasn't as important. Before you think I've lost it, they were amazed at my honesty and up front willingness to pay full price, and I ended up with the perfect trade price, and a car at a nice discount!!
Bang on the deal I would have liked actually, and there was zero hardball, hardsell, or anything from either side. Ralphy baby, I owe you a big one!
It gets better still, for they had ALL 3 of the cars I wanted to drive, in stock, and in the right colours and specs. What's the chances of that?? I think the big guy upstairs wanted me to own a VW today!
I arrived at 9.30 am, and 4 hours later, signed on the line.
I went in expecting to buy the silver GT TSI manual they had, and drove it first. I was impressed with the go off idle, certainly didn't feel like a "turbo", just power all over. It does indeed feel like a 2.5 litre car, but a bit more sporty. A great, reasonably smooth mix of torque and revs. I thought I could easily live with this car, even though it was the lighter silver ( and I was in love with the darker uniting grey ahead of time. ) Still a great drive, and I can see why those that own it love it. I was pretty set on it.
Ray that was looking after me got tied up with another drop in customer, and I had the time so I offered to wait. No stress. Andrew the sales manager came out and took over, dropping everything on quite a busy morning. He talked me into trying the GT TDI manual, as they had *just* gotten one in straight off the transporter. I test drove it with plastic all over it, covered in dirt and dust, it had like 7kms on it! I hopped in thinking " a diesel....yeah right...." and from the first instant the turbo kicked in and I felt that WALL of torque, well, I couldn't stop smiling. Like an idiot. The motor is indeed a bit loud when you get up it, but to me it sounded fine, more induction roar sort of noise than the rattly diesel I was expecting. I got to drive it up some great hills, and I can see why this would be a deamon in the mountains. Such grunt, and still willing to rev for a diesel. Blew me away. This made the choice bloody hard, and it was uniting grey!!
As I sat there back at the dealer talking numbers with Ray, I decided to go all out. I had seen on carsales that they had a grey manual GTI in stock ( didn't know it came in this colour, but it sure does! ) and they went and had a look, as it too was brand new. They brought it up for test drive number three!
WOW.
I was instantly impressed with the higher spec, and the uniting colour, with the red stripe and wheels was horny as. The interior, seats and steering wheel were instant advantages, and the drive...well I see why this is indeed so highly regarded. No lag, torque everywhere, and all the fat midrange you could want. Very obvious harder suspension, but drove like a knife around corners. That beastie could really go, and I could see my licence points vanishing already

I came back in love with all three!! I took the TSI out again after the GTI, and have to say it did feel a bit less great after the mighty GTI, but not that much, what I really noticed was how much "revier" it was after the easy almost lazy power of the GTI, and the even cruiser TDI monster. All the cars were in my pricerange, all sexy and suitable.
Well to get to the point, in all it took 4 hours for me to decide on the ..... TDI
Yep, the torque, driving range and sheer smile factor won for me. The cars are all within $5k of each other and that makes for a tough decision. To have them ALL there, and available, was almost cruel! The guys laughed as I agonised over the decision, and wandered downstairs to look at them all again. The TSI, whilst the cheapest and highest tech, was the lighter colour and had a few hundy km's on it. The GTI, whilst awesome, was just a bit too go-cart and rough for me, must be getting old. The fact the driving range was only about 100kms more than my thirsty FPV was a factor for me too.
So I feel very fortunate to have had the option to have any one of three dream cars to drive and to buy and take delivery of NEXT WEEK. Even the manager said I was a lucky, lucky guy, for it's rare they have all three, let alone in a customers preferred colours.
So ralphy, I love ya, VW forumites, I love ya too, and VW, I'm awestruck with the amazing varients of the golf that are out there in the market.
Anyone in Brisbane, well, you could do a LOT worse than a drive to Maroochydore to visit Garry Crick VW on the sunshine coast. My deal is even better again, but I've written enough. I'm an amazed, but happy newbie oil lover!
So you MAD bast@rds chip these???? Holy cow!!!
