    Enjoy!
Good GOD, that would have made for a BIG day. It was a seven hour effort as it was, good hour drive each way...

I'm sure the R32 would be quite the punt, but it was definately outside both my spending and fuel economy aims, as I am trying to drop BELOW the fuel useage and dollar consumption of my outgoing FPV..... and if you were looking at an R32, the GTI would be the only other logical VW option. The GT series strikes me as a mix between the Sports and Comfort line, and the hardcore GTI / R32 end. I wanted a mix, so that was my aim.

When you're young it's different, for your girlfriend is nice and perky, and not as affected by harsh suspension!

      Well today was THE day.

I'm knackered and will write more tomorrow, but I have to say the new toy has a purposeful hard 300kms on her now, and the drive home through the hills all afternoon was an absolute blast. What a joy to drive!

And it's showing 7L/100kms, and I'm not driving for economy!!

The passing of the GT torch.....

Not sure how you can get so excited about the 3 going in a straight line after coming from the GT

          But congrats!

            Well Done.
Like i think i have said previously. I am going from a VXII 5.7l Clubsport to a TDI DSG GT Sport.
Trouble is I've had way too much time to think about the change as i ordered back on 6th december.
Every now and then when playing around in the clubby i start to think that I'm really going to miss the sheer power and grunt it has.
I only hope that the VW pleases me when i finally get it.
So, tell me more, any regrets, do you miss the Ford (even though it is a ford )
            How good is the VW.?
I need some positive news here to keep me going. But please be honest.

                  But congrats!

Well I drove the FPV in, said goodbye, checked the average fuel use which was reading 17L/100 and then took the golf home the twisty way, averaging 10L/100kms less than the drive up.

On a quarter mile, you'd want the FPV or a tweaked up turbo.

Finding two wheels far more stimulating than four, to me it's the twisty bits and response that float my boat.

The golf does both very adequately stock.

if the clubby is stock i would think that a chipped gt with a couple of extras would be nearly as quick in-gear... and twice as quick around corners

                      Logzy,

In absolute utter truth, I don't miss my V8.

I've wanted a GT Ford since I watched Moffit go 1/2 at Bathurst when I was 7 years old. I LOVED that Ford, and I enjoyed driving it everyday, no lie. It took me near 30 years to get one, but it meant that much to me. And I don't care who is thrashing it right now.....

You will miss the top end, and the instant poke of the V8. Perhaps the DSG gets around the lag down low better than the manual, I don't know.

I know the Holden's are a lighter car than the Ford, and more responsive, but that said, I've had several traffic light derby's with "your" side, and it was more about launch than anything else. I've roasted my share of better reviewed HSV's

To give you my view, the Ford was a lazy, lead tipped arrow to drive. Super comfortable, effortless power, and despite having an antique and terrible 4 speed auto, you just basically steered the thing. It had ballistic top end, and it was all too easy to do ludicrous speeds, all day long.

The downside was constant attention, usually unwanted, from tailgaters wanting to push you, to traffic light jockeys, to the fuzz. In an age of carbon footprints, petrol prices and speed camera proliferation, the V8 isn't the smartest choice. Hey I'm glad I owned one, but this morning driving through traffic, I felt very very self rightous amongst all the petrol cars. That and the fact I have my own personal ozone layer hole from the Ford to make up for!

The first drive home in the Golf was an absolute joy. I definately have missed a manual, and that's good cause you do have to row a bit due to the powerband. I've missed a car than is light, and can CORNER. Good god, it's been too long. That torque burst far exceeds the FPV, and whilst the V8 just keeps going, I flogged the poor VW all the way home ( within run in limits ) and the fuel economy was just amazing. The Ford would be into the 18-20's L / 100 driven like that through the mountains, and you'd be destroying the tyres and brakes trying to corner the same. I realise the Holdens corner better due to less weight, but my suggestion is to plan a twisty, mountainous way home when you get yours, and you'll be in love with it too.

Dude, the V8 is a dinosaur these days. Hugely fun, but also a bit like smoking, slowly becoming less and less acceptable.

I totally understand your thinking, and even when I got to the dealer and put the cars side by side for a photo, I thought, what am I doing???

One twisty drive later, and that thought is dead and buried

In those circumstances I think the stock TDI would worry a stock FPV GT. Especially cornering, as the weight of a v8 is such a hinderance.

This Golf goes around corners faster than I'm game to try!

Thanks, that just what i wanted to hear and i didnt have to pay you a cent.
I agree with everything youve said and believe me the clubby has similar characteristics as the ford, chewing tyres, brakes, quality of the auto etc.
I've had the "what are you doing" thoughts several times but honestly i cant wait to get my golf.
Good to hear youre giving it a bit of a flog to run it in too, its how they should be run in, mine sure will be.
The clubby isnt stock and it does get a good flogging now and then but hey, its time for a change.
                          Thanks for your positive thoughts.

NOW I JUST WANT MY NEW CAR.!!!!!

I drove it home harder than I let on, in case the purists here get their panties in a twist. I'm a big fan of a high combustion pressure run in.

I just avoided max revs, but everything else was fair game.

No problem from me re the engine driving like that from new , but some concerns about the possibility of slippery new tyres and unbedded brakes could let you down if you drive a brand new car too hard in the first 200Km or so (after that the mould release slime should have worn off the tyres and the brakes should have started to bed in)

LOL at the purists ,and the dealer standing there scratching his head thinking "was that thig just purchased or stolen"
I'll be driving mine exactly the same as you, guarnteed.
I also believe in high combustion pressures for the run in.

As for the wax on the tyres, this can be removed very easily with esp off, at least on the front anyhow.
