  • RCD510 install in MK5 Jetta.

Has anyone done this? I'm a little confused whether or not I will need to replace the CAN gateway...

Yes you will need to either upgrade the canbus gateway or get the existing gateway upgraded by someone with the right tools. Transporter in Adelaide can do it not sure of someone local to you can do it.

As Kamold says, most 05/06/07 cars need the sw update.
If you have the VCDS scan from your car you could check the cangateway sw against the list in this post http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...all-75217.html

Cheers guys. Is upgrading the CAN software something that a dealer can do? I don't have access to VCDS or own a cable. Not keen on forking out $250 for one just to upgrade the radio haha.

There is heaps of info about the topic on this forum and google. If you require the newer gateway it's not really worth it, I did the math when I was contemplating buying one and it was more cost effective to buy an ANS-510 (Do a search on this forum if you dont know what an ANS is) which had heaps more functionality then an rcd510 and doesn't require the gateway upgrade.

Interesting! I've had a look on eBay and the ANS510 is going for about $600, whereas the RCD510 is about $250..

I'm curious as to why the ANS wouldn't require the gateway upgrade? It's a much more beefier unit, as you said! So wouldn't that mean it'd drain more power?

Re: RCD510 install in MK5 Jetta.

The battery drain is due to the head unit not powering down after you switch the car off. The correct canbus gateway tells the head unit to power off after 30 mins.
The ans is not affected as it just turns off as soon as you pull the keys.

A dealer won't upgrade your canbus gateway unless you are really friendly with them. Vcds cannot upgrade the software on the canbus gateway either.
Transporter in Adelaide can do it but not sure of anyone else who can. Need the right technician tools.

You are looking at $1000 plus and lose the 6 stacker and get an HDD instead

Buy a Tomtom or a Garmin for $200 and go to the pub. You get a better 100% better GPS and a nice day out LOL
