Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

If you wait for the right opportunity you will probably be able to pick up a whole spare set of rims for the price VW will charge for 1

Two replacement sets of tyres are included in the lease anyway, so I guess it just amounts to one pretty early tyre.

I know. There's a set on offer in the US for $1000 right now. I wonder what shipping would cost?

                Wheel repairer

In answer to the original question...Advanced Alloys in Moorabbin did a top job for me week before last. I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago (myself) in my R32....4 days old!! Scratched 3 spokes badly by hitting a bluestone kerbstone that was sitting out of alignment as i parked. I was very impressed with their service, price and quality of the job. The repair included machining on a lathe, rubbing back and repainting. The challenge was dealing with the part where the paint stops and there is exposed alloy (around the edge of the rim.

ANyway, i thought they did a great job, and were very good to deal with. Plus, Peter appreciates the R32....

Thanks LookOut. I've sent off an email to Advanced Alloys, and will talk to them on Monday. Thankfully, now that I've actually seen the wheel, it isn't anywhere near as bad as described, the marks are confined to the unpainted section over about 4 inches. On the other hand, the tyre will have to be replaced.

And I looked at the spot where it happened. In a brilliant bit of road making, it's a fairly open corner at the end of a freeway, and the guttering is actually quite gently sloped. You could probably run over it at almost any point without harm. But, at one point on the far side of a drain, for no obvious reason, a small section juts out from the rest and it's this bit that she clipped.

Hmm, I've got 1 bad and 1 little bit kerbed rims on my GTI from the Mrs, the GTI rims have to be the WORST design ever for kerbing.

I wonder if these guys could do a job on those?

Very likely. Have a look at their web site, and there are some pretty good before and after examples.

Quoted $200, and offered to have it back to me the next day, but right now I can't get the tyre until after Xmas, so I'll get the repair done once they restart in the new year. No point in remounting the old (and very suspect) tyre.

BTW, a Dunlop Sport Maxx in 225/40ZR18 is $460..... There are a couple of different varieties of this tyre. The one used on the MkIV R32 has an 88 load rating, and is Japanese made, and the new one is a 92, and comes from Germany.

And I've just found out that these tyres are on 'back order'. Supposedly none in the country. But I do have a nice blue garden gnome.

Why does everyone blame their Mrs for kerbing rims?

Im sure its true most of the time but surely sometimes its not, i kerbed the f**k out of my GTI wheels twice, once when avoiding a truck, and once when perving on some random chick waiting to cross the road

Well, I don't know about everyone else, but I was overseas at the time. I sure hope it was her.

Last wheel that I curbed was on a Commodore SL/E, back around 1980. She hasn't been too bad though, as prior to this, she's only done one that I know of. My HSV GTS.....

On the plus side, they found me a tyre, so I just need to head to the wheel repair people once they open up again in the new year.
