Oil to suit mk5 (off shelf)

Define loose As in, a bit noisier since new? If so, then yeah, I might give the 5w-40 a go. It's been serviced every 15,000 k's but yeah, it's a tad noisy.
Yeah, he tried to buy the car off me when I brought it in for him to give it a once over when I was considering buying it (it was lent to me over the weekend). So his info to me was probably a bit off.

supercheap now carries vw504.00 castrol edge 5w-30.

the other existing castrol edge titanium 5w-30 is vw502.00 which will go on special this Sat.

Just thought i'd share my experiences:

Originally used: Shell Helix Ultra Extra (now branded as Shell Helix Ultra ECT)
Now using: Valvoline XL-III Syn Power

Still not really happy with either of them, expensive and burning oil pretty quickly (1L per 1000kms) as doing more kms these days.

Next I want to either try Fuchs or the Penrite 5w30 (504 approved). The goal for me is to find something a bit longer lasting.

Has anyone noticed better or worse oil consumption after switching brands/oils?
You can now get Castrol 504 approved oil but I've read goes pretty quick so doubt I'll try that one out.

If it's a petrol, there are a few approved 5W40 oils, such as Liqui Moly Toptec 4100, which may help with the oil consumption problems.

Still has a 15K drain cycle, and is a little bit cheaper.

Sure its not 4200 (that is 504 approved).. the 4100 is 502 approved.

$105/5L at Autobarn, not very cheap compared to $80/5L for the other off shelf brands

502 is OK in them as long as you're changing it at max 15K intervals.

504 is good for 30K.

Just purchased some Fuchs 504.00 oil, $67 at Bursons Auto QLD. So keen to try it, was suprised at the price

yes, edge 5w-30 is VW 502.00 compliant (maybe even 504.00 these days) and is fine for your car. If the engine is getting a bit loose then a 5w-40 502.00 spec should be used.

Do not use a semi-synth oil.

If your mechanic doesn't understand the difference between synth/semi-synth and viscosity then I'd be finding a new mech.
