Has anyone found an oil that helps with excessive consumption? I'm currently tracking mine, but it looks like I could be running pretty close to the 500mL / 1000km rate and currently using Penrite E+ 5w-30. Anything that might help reduce the usage?

I've just serviced my car and switched over to Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40. It's only VW 502.00/505.00 approved, but should be ok for 15k service intervals.
I'll see if the thicker oil helps with consumption. Mine is burning 1L every 4-5000km.

With a Flash point of only 215degC I doubt that it will make any measurable difference to the oil usage.
I've been running Nulon Euro full synthetic since we bought ours five years ago. Turbo diesel.
It's not VW Approved. Nulon say make it to the 504/507 specification but they haven't submitted the oil to VW for testing. Therefore you have to take Nulon's word that they have blended it correctly.

Hi,
Mine (same BWA engine) consumed oil at a similar rate when using Castrol Edge 5w30 and Penrite Env+0w40.
Saw an improvement after switching to Penrite HPR5 and HPR10.
Curiously, HPR10 also yielded slightly better fuel economy than HPR5.
Have since tried Nulon Synthetic 10w40. Got similar oil consumption to HPR5/10. But fuel economy suffered. ...didn't think my driving was any different.
Currently trying Nulon 5w40. Expecting to see slightly worse oil consumption, but hoping to see an improvement in fuel economy.
Time will tell as to whether I go back to HPR10 or to stay with this Nulon.
All were chosen based on their (albeit self-proclaimed) meeting of 502.00 specs.
Hope that helps.
cheers
Peter

Guys, I've just bought a 2006 GTI. It's got 230,000k's on the clock Would the Castrol Edge 5w30 still be ok? My mechanic said a semi-synthetic oil might be a bit better as a fully synthetic could be too viscous.
Also, the Castrol Edge 5w30 is half price at SCA this Saturday ($35'ish). There's a special on. So if anyone needs some, grab some on Saturday!
yes, edge 5w-30 is VW 502.00 compliant (maybe even 504.00 these days) and is fine for your car. If the engine is getting a bit loose then a 5w-40 502.00 spec should be used.
Do not use a semi-synth oil.
If your mechanic doesn't understand the difference between synth/semi-synth and viscosity then I'd be finding a new mech.
