Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Shell Helix HX7 10W-40 is indeed approved to 502/505, but I'd say that Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 (502/505) and especially Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 (504/507) are much better suited to FSI engines.

I could only find that it meets and that's not the same in my books. I wouldn't use it even if it was approved.

The Forester we bought new in 1999 had in the specs that you could use SG specs oil, but at the same time they were calling for the latest energy conserving 5W30 oil.

Rumours of GTX being between 50-85% recycled oil have been floating around for years.

Do you have a link to any press release or product information? Is it 504.00/507.00 compliant?

We used to use recycled oil when I was at Goodyear in the early 80s. We used to sell our old oil to the recyclers for 5c a litre (and it was full of brake fluid, diff oil & battery acid) & buy recycled back for 20c/L. It was rubbish oil but how else can you offer a lube with filter for $10? We had a recomended change interval of 3months/5000km.

If it's 15w-40 then it probably isn't 504.00/507.00 & therefore doesn't suit a mkV. Maybe you should have started a new thread?

Oil to suit mk5 (off shelf)

                    5w-40 valvoline synpower

Have found it to go through less oil than running on 5w-30 as viscotity is higher

                          Would 504.00 / 507.00 also work for a 2007 2.0 TDI MY08? Thanks in advance.

You need 507.00 spec because you have DPF

Thanks for the quick reply. I use penrite enviro+ 5w30 (which is approved for VW 504.00 / 507.00) for a Skoda TSI so that should work for the golf TDI too. Saves me buying different grades of oil.
